The tinkers are now known widely as the Knackers. They are the Irish version of the Gypsies.

Of course now in Ireland there are a lot of Roma too (Roma are the gypsies around Hungary & Romaina) because of the romanian refugees.

The Roma steal your earings right out of your ears.

In Ireland in times gone by a Tinker was a man that made handcraft tin cups ie tin...kers and other household cutlery and they moved from town to town saome of these Tinkers even made shoes for horses and repaired gates for farmers.Gypsies on the other hand where people that were nomadic and traveled in horse drawn caravans and were mostly musicians and told stories etc they also traded in breeding and selling horses

Gypsies are a specific ethnic group, whereas tinker simply refers to a nomadic peddler.
