I've Put A Lot Of Thought Into This Exact Question.

For When Someone Is Yawning In the View Of Another Person and They Yawn, That Doesn't Need Much Explanation (It's just Suggestion/Empathy/Relatedness. (But Not At All Limited To This)(READ ON...)

But It's Proven That It Is Contageous Aswell (You Can Go Up Behind Someone When they're relaxing And Silently Yawn Hard And There'll Be A Good Chance that The Person Will Do It To.

I Believe That the Body's Energy Field Changes During A Yawn And Since Other People Can Sesse This At Least On A Physical And Biomechanical Level, (And It's A Great Beneficial Change),
They Are Compelled To Do It Also.

man people are so dumb... some of these answers are ridiculas.

Yes yawns are contageous

When someone yawns in a room the act of you yawning is not for lack of oxygen from them taking it all up. Someone said if your in a crowded room that might be the case, give me a break, good idea but very simple minded thing to say.

No body really knows why yawns are contageous, it even happens with other animals too.

Yes you can yawn from lack of oxygen and bordom but it's almost an automous refex that serves fo increase oxygen and I believe that it aslo serves as a way of streatching/excercizing your lungs and diaphram as your bodies attempts to preserving a healthy respitory system
But I also believe that there is much more to it then that.

I never thought of the reason, but they are highly contagious. Plus I cannot believe the people who said they are not. Are they contagious to only some people, I wonder.

Yawns are due to insufficient oxygen to the brain, so if you are in a poorly ventilated room, everyone can start to yawn.

Another person's yawning, alerts your brain as a sort of reflex that there isn't enough oxygen and that you need more.

they are not just everyone believes they are. You yawn because your brain lacks oxygen sometimes and causes your body to react by yawnig and because your sleepy aka brain is tired (lacking Oxygen)

the last vestige of group think. We're still flockers and can survive much easier together. Laughter and sleep are essential for a cohesive cooperative.

They are...but only if you really connect or like the person. If you hate the person..then it won't happen.
