This is a unique time in our history. We need to "stay the course" and facilitate change at the same time. It is in the heart and soul of every conservative to stay the course, as it is the heart and soul of a liberal to change. This is a rare time when we need both sides of the aisle to work shoulder-to-shoulder in a common cause.
Our military is fighting a multi-headed monster in the struggle against terrorism. In a conventional war, when you decapitate the enemy it will collapse. With this enemy, new heads keep emerging. The only way to beat it is to cut its legs out from under it. With no legs, it's harmlessly immobile.
The legs, or the root cause, of our troubles with the Middle East is oil. More specifically, it is our need to secure an energy source to fuel our economy. Not only has our interference with local governments in the region caused the native people in the area to hate us, countries like Iran are using oil revenue to finance terrorism and develop nuclear weapons.
To combat this, we must move America closer to energy independence. With its close ties to business, it's impossible to conceive the Republican party ever addressing this issue. Only the Democratic party can undertake this task. The leadership of the Democratic party, however, is too busy shooting arrows in the backs of the Republicans to see that the energy issue is now a matter of national defense and not simply a matter of questionable global warming.
Yes. We need to stay the course with swift and decisive military action against aggression. But, we also must facilitate change with a second war of independence, a war of energy independence.

that stay-the-course nonsense reminds me of when you get lost with someone and instead of asking for directions or turning around, they think they should just keep driving and they will eventually find their way.

I don't know how you can "Stay the Course" when the "Mission" is already "Accomplished".
