Is it still the dream of most Americans to own your own home, that is, as opposed to renting it?

I was brought up in the belief that renting as 'throwing your money away' but I now rent an appartment and I rather like it. And I don't have to pay the water and garbage bill or mow the lawn! And no property tax. And if I decided to move I wouldn't have to worry about putting the place up for sale. And if you really want a yard you can rent a house--it's not like it has to be an appartment.

I could see the big deal about owning your home if you were going to pass your property on to your kids or something like that--but I don't know anyone who lives in their parent's old house.

Anyone have thoughts on this--I'm just curious.

DREAMS are as diverse as those that dream them!
And we Americans can be very diverse!!
But in my opinion the dream you speak of represents safety, security and happiness. Which have different meanings for us all!

The American Dream- Traditonally is : house, job, car, kids, pool, having spending money. I think some have changed and others have not. Many people would like not to go from paycheck to paycheck. Others may not want kids. Others may want to rent. The american dream changes with the change of the average american. Many things stay the same others don't. Don't know if thi helps but this is my idea of it

Traditional american dream is family,a car and the white picket fence.Which mean american people want a family, a job/car and of course a house, but i think it really means just a place to live not nessacary owning it. So I think the american people for the most part want this things.

To each their own.. I can see both points of view, honestly. I'm a single woman who owns her own home, and it is frustrating. It is a lot of responsibility, but there is also a great sense of security in knowing that it's mine & that no one can take it away from me.

Financially, for me, it makes sense for me to own a house. Depending on where you live, the cost of housing in your area, your income, etc., renting may be what is best for you. I don't think either way is "right" or "wrong."

Home ownership is about aquisition of wealth, not yard maintenance.

Consider a condo. You do have to pay for the association fee so the yardwork is done, but you at least build equity.

Renting is throwing $$$ into the wind.

there's more to the american dream than just owning your own home.

i think many americans are enslaved to it. and yes. it is outdated.
