well if he opened it he wouldv'e been able to talk to sirius and truly find out if he was "ok" instead of using the stupid fire in umbridge's room and kreacher tricking him. stupid kreacher

It was very irritating that he didn't think of it sooner but that's seems to be typical for Harry to forget about the simple things. For example, in the Goblet of Fire chapter 25 The Egg and the Eye when Harry is headed to the common room from the prefect's bathroom, where he was working out the egg clue, and get's his leg stuck in the trick stairs. The map and the egg fly out of his hands and the map is too far away for his wand to touch it to wipe it clean. He had his wand in his hand so why didn't he use Accio to summon the map and the egg to him? That irritated me too because he had used Accio in the first task so he knew how, he just didn't think of it.

Yeah, but we all forget things like that when we are panicked. Besides, they wouldn't have gotten rid of Umbridge if they hadn't been in there.
