1980-81 technically. But 1982 is when it first entered our lives


Phillips and Sony announced the joint CD standard in 1981, they decided to end their collaboration so they can work on their individual products. Also during 1981, Sharp started to mass produce semiconductor lasers.

1982 - Sony and Phillips with in one year had a product ready to go, and soon released the CD to the public

In the late 70's/early 80's, I remember a DJ complaining about this new thing called a compact disc that the station wanted him to play. It was more like a floppy disc back then and if bent it wouldn't play. Every time he came across one that would not play, he would sling it across the room. These were not available for home use at the time.

I first recall seeing CD's for sale in record stores back in 1981, so I'm going to say between 1979 and 1981.
