Call the phone company and tell them you're going on vacation for a month or two weeks or whatever and ask them if they can suspend service while you are out of town

Call the phone company and tell them that you want to disconnect service temporarily and that you will be reconnecting within a given amount of days. If you ask they will reserve your same phone number.
