Certainly..I beg to differ with one of the answers calling the destruction of the middle class merely collateral damage....The current administration's disregard of the constitution, the granting of citizen's rights to corporations, the out-sourcing of jobs, corporate welfare, lack of oversight, manipulation of the media for propagandistic purposes, destruction of the public education system, new bankruptcy laws that protect large creditors, but offer nothing to J.Q. Public, decreased tax liability for wealthy elite, crumbling medicare system, rape of our environment, misuse of our National Guard, abuse of our military personel by repeatedly exposing them to combat tours, neglect of our war veterans...do you need more examples of the current war on the middle class?
We have people in power that DO NOT want the existence of a middle class. Their goal is to create only 2 classes: masses of desititutes, and a very small group of excessively wealthy. When people are extrememly poor, they are more willing to do the "unthinkable"...thereby allowing the wealthy to "not get their prissy little fingers dirty." By dismantling the public education system, they create an ignorant public, and can be easily controlled...just look at all the FOX News junkies....they still believe that Iraq had something to do with the bombing of the Twin Towers. Take a look at how well the media lap dogs have delivered the constant barrage of "terror", creating fear in much of the population..."Men in fear are fools, and fool themselves." By this, it is meant that people don't think when they're scared...and the general population of this country have allowed themselves to hand over their basic rights because "terror" has been shoved down their throats. Another tool of destruction is religion. There are actually churches (that receive tax-exempt status) that profess to their congregants to "know the mind of God --- A God that wants them to bring on Armegeddon. Unfortunately, the folks being led have not read the very first chapter of Genesis...Where god Created everything and BLESSED IT. They don't get that the Bible has been edited repeatedly throughout history, and that GOD dwells within ALL of CREATION -- How can war, agression, hate, deprivation, ridicule, disrespect be Godly? Any church that speaks out against US led attrocities is immediately chided and threatened with the loss of their tax-exempt status..."Religion is the opiate of the masses."
Greed is insatiable, and those that possess such traits will stop at nothing to feed their habit. Conspire to do good and be a positive force on this planet, and eventually, like it has throughout history, tyranny and fascism will crumble. The human spirit can only grow so weary.

In pure capitalism, yes, a "middle class" would be out of place and under attack. However, most economic systems blend some socialism into their capitalism. It was this blend that allowed the middle class to develop. While I'm very much a libertarian, and therefore fiscally conservative, I think that we will always need to do a little something to help the workers or they will start a revolution, no matter how subtle.. It has hapenned in every society, even ours, multiple times.

Not the middle class per se, but Middle America.
The coasts are ravaging middle america, taking taxes and talent.
Most of this comes from the political left, who have been losing ground in Middle America for decades.
Much of Middle America is based on the middle class: opportunity, socioeconomic mobility, liberty... so it's easy to get the two mixed up.
PS Note the thumbs down that come from those who side w/ the political left. They hate Middle America.

Elimination of the middle class would supposedly bring more profit to the corporations? But if you take the ability to spend money away from people, you will lose something in that - some of the vibrancy in our society will die, and life will be more boring that it is for you now.

No, I don't think so. But if there is in your mind, who do you think is waging this war against you? The Free Enterprise System is just that. You profit and prosper on the merits of your acheivement alone. The government owes you nothing; all this talk about the government owing you a wage, health insurance, shelter, is bulls'hit. Different country, Pal. You and all your pals wanna go to a communist country for that kind of hand out. But if you buy into that, you have to buy into the rest of their crap, and I don't think you and the rest of the liberals want that.

Yes....and it all has to do with health care. With no health care there is no middle class. It's becoming more and more expensive and people can't afford it.
