did you set out poison for mice or something like that?
Normally, the smell of a rotting carcass is unmistakable.

Could be, if by "strange" you mean "really bad." It could also be mold or something that spilled back there or just a damp musty smell if the cabinet isn't used often. Try cleaning it out really well and wiping the inside with bleach and water, then leaving it open until it is completely dry.
