Generalizations about the mental capacities/workings of any group of people are never true.
Whether they are grouped together by beliefs, race, country, hobbies, pets..etc.
They are only similiar in one area...what put them in that grouping in the first place.

I agree with having to protect our environment.
And do not believe in the abuse of animals.
How ever the question is were do you draw the line.
2 years ago the was a major fire here in northern AZ. The town of Show-low and many small towns were almost lost.
Many homes were lost.
the worse part of this is that due to forest management the forests were over grown, and due to not letting fires burn over the last 50 years the floors were thick with dead wood and needles. instead of 30 trees per acre there were 300 to 400 trees per acre. ( fire weeds out the small and weak trees.)
Yet instead of allowing for timber harvesting to thin the forest, every time a local lumber mill got a permit the environmentalist filed suits and stopped it. Now instead of having a healthy forest we have 1000's of acres of burnt out land.
Due to forest intervention ( fighting forest fires.) the fire got so hot it jumped into the crowns and killed the trees. this tree would have survived if the fire would have stayed on the ground.
The funny thing is that these same Environmentalist live in homes, made out of lumber. which mean trees were cut, use paper. once again trees. eat food that was grown someplace were the natural grasses and trees were removed in order to have farms
The question should be were do you draw the line?

Compassion without understanding is idiocy..
Proper management at times requires selective harvest,, be it flora or fauna.... Ever seen an over population of starving animals? Transplanting normally displaces animals already established in a given area.. There is a difference between conservation and preservation,, most preservationist are wackos.

Well, logic is predatory. Emotions are prey. Humans often use logic to supress their emotions and this almost always works, but in return other behavoirs or physical symptoms manifest like depression and/or high blood pressure. Humans and animals alike are tuned to immediately feel emotion, however unlike animals that use the information in their emotions, humans use logic to rationalize their emotions and tuck them away so they can conform to society and be like everybody else. You know, like your neighbor who seems to have it all and is happy.
Scientists are only now beginning to recognize Emotional Intelligence in humans and animals, particularly horses, which are used in therapy programs to heal abuse victims who've learned early on to supress their emotions and therefore make horrible choices in life that lead them down similar abusive paths. An abuse victim's emotional intelligence is however high since they've learned through body language and other unspoken signals when their abuser is looking for a victim, but they supress that very information that is most helpful with their life by thinking, "This person can change." "They don't really mean it." or "Things will get better." Logic preys on their emotional signals (some strong enough to cause cramping) to get away. Children will emotionally shut down and mentally "leave the room".
We can not ignore emotions and only rely on logic. Life is not that easy. Both logic and emotion should be used together and when people use their emotion and build their logic off of their feelings they are labeled "tree huggers", but they are far more advanced in their relating to the world and others than their "logical" counterparts, who rely on only facts and not the wealth of information their emotions can offer. Society can not continue without emotions. We would lack being human and would infect ourselves with robot logic and "Group think".
As the saying goes, "Two are better than one".

I do not think that they all started out being unintelligent and they then slowly loose their minds. We had a group of them here release all of the animals at a mink farm. All of those animals then starved to death and were run over by cars. Instead of being in their safe mink cages full of food. Now I do not believe that the way they kill the mink is the best way to go about it, but their radical actions are not the way either.

Hey, you're barking up the wrong tree!! lol (Pun intended!) If we don't fight for the preservation of natural habitats--the whole world loses. You wold think that human beings could figure out how to coexist with nature.
