There are 193 independent countries around the world. The united nations recognizes 192 countries because the Vatican City, that is independent and has chosen not to become a member of the U.N.
There are dozens of territories and colonies that are erroneously called countries but they don't count at all, this include: Taiwan (only 26 countries -as of early 2005- recognize Taiwan as an independent country), Puerto Rico, Bermuda, Greenland, Palestine, Western Sahara, and the components of the United Kingdom (such as Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and England). The reason for this is that they haven't comply with all the accepted criterias used to determine whether a place is an independent country or not. This criterias are:
1. Has space or territory that has internationally recognized boundaries (boundary disputes are OK).
2. Has people who live there on an ongoing basis.
3. Has economic activity and an organized economy. A country regulates foreign and domestic trade and issues money.
4. Has the power of social engineering, such as education.
5. Has a transportation system for moving goods and people.
6. Has a government that provides public services and police power.
7. Has sovereignty. No other State should have power over the country's territory.
8. Has external recognition. A country has been "voted into the club" by other countries (majority vote).
