Please DON'T post a printout from a website...just whatever you think of first...this is just for fun...not for a grade. My first thought was Lonely Avenue from Van Morrison....what's yours?

Tobacco Road. Although it's been covered a million times since being penned by John D. Loudermilk in 1959, the song sneaks back and haunts me. Maybe it's a result of my childhood at the Saint Helen of the Holy Shroud Orphanage in Calumet City, but these lyrics cut through my soul like a knife:

I was born in a dump
Mama died and daddy got drunk
Left me here to die or grow
In a middle of Tobacco Road

Grew up in a rusty shack
All I had was hangin' on my back
Only you know how I loathe
This place called Tobacco Road

But it's home the only life I've ever known
Only you know how I loathe
Tobacco Road

Gonna leave get a job
With the help and the grace from above
Save same money get rich I know
Bring it back to Tobacco Road

Bring dynamite and a crane
Blow it up start all over again
Build to a town be proud to show
Give the name Tobacco Road

The version that does it for me to this day was recorded live by Edgar Winter's White Trash on their 1972 Roadwork album
