Hi
I'm in a band and we write all our own songs, we want to bring out a CD. Just wonder how you go about copywriting something like a song or cd, and is it free.

Thanks very much

Chris

depends where you are and what the laws of copyright are. If in UK then go to government website should be easy enough to Google and follow the procedures therein.

Put a CD of your song(s) together with a sheet of paper with the lyrics to the song(s) and the songwriter's name(s) (clearly written, or best typed - very important) into an envelope and send it to yourself on recorded delivery. Upon receiving the envelope back, make sure it remains unopened and take it to your solicitor for them to look after. Then if you hear any of your songs being claimed by anyone else you have the means to prove that they were yours from date determined by the franking stamp on the envelope. This is why you should leave the envelope sealed!!!

You can go to the government's copyright site and download the form for free. You fill out the form and send it in with a copy of your CD and a lyric sheet. I think the fee is $35 or something like that.

It is free, copyright is automatic on any thing you produce, like writing artwork or music. You don't need to do anything, copyright starts as soon as the work is produced. If you're in the UK, British law states that an individuals work is copyrighted as soon as the idea leaves the mind and is presented in physical form. If you are in the US you have to fill in a form and send in a fee.

Depends on which jurisdiction you are in. However it is an internationally upheld principle that the artist is entitled to protection from the courts should their copyright be infringed.
Put simply (if you record it) it is yours. To obtain the music publishing rights ( the important bit) it will be necessary to contact a music publisher.

the sending it to yourself is a classic, easy to do and works well (although i'm not sure if it's 100% foolproof)
