My mom died from unknown causes and I haven't told my family yet. My dad is sick and in a nursing home so I don't want to tell him over the phone. My brother is in Iraq and I can't get in touch with him.

I need to call someone because I don't know what to do with her.

My mother is in her bed. Will an ambulance pick her up or do I have to call a funeral home?

I though about calling the police but it's not a crime.

My brother always deals with this stuff.

I would call the military branch your brother belongs to. They will find him and more than likely bring him home for funeral services.

I am SO sorry to hear of your loss. You have my deepest condolences. You have just jumped on a roller coaster that will go something like this:

If you do not want to use 911, use the non-emergency police number. In our area, the police respond first, call EMS to have them actually pronounce her dead. The medical examiner will then be called. If your mom was under the care of a doctor, you might also want to place a phone call to them, as the medical examiner or their representative will be calling them. If the doctor feels that the evidence is she died of a natural disease process, and is willing to sign the death certificate to that effect, the medical examiner will not place this death under their jurisdiction.

Hopefully, the police department in your area has victim's assistance to help you through all the steps you will need to perform. First off, you will need to chose a funeral home. If you have not done this already, you will need to (or perhaps get a friend to) place phone calls, don't be afraid to inquire about prices. You will have to sign a contract with them for funeral arrangements. You can also have the police department contact the military, his deployment base, or if all else fails, the local FBI number, they should be willing to send your brother back soon for this kind of situation. He needs to be here for this also. They usually give them two weeks leave for this situation. The victim's assistance should also be willing to help you notify your father.

If you have a close family friend or minister/pastor that you would feel more comfortable doing all these activites with, by all means, go that route. This activity is NOT something you should be expected to do by yourself.

You will find yourself in "zombie" mode for the next few days. To help you combat the grief and the shock at what she looked like in death, retrieve any and all photos/videos/letters of your mom that you have access to and look at them as much as you can. It does help to dilute the image that looms so large right now.

Now, go make that phone call. Again, my condolences.

Call the County Coroner also called the Medical Examiner. If she is still in her home, call the police.
