Something made or given shape by man, especially an object of archaeological interest. Examples of artefacts: stone tools, pottery... Variant spelling: artifact

An Artefact (it can also be spelled artifact, but both are correct) is an object that has been made by someone, as opposed to something that has been created by nature. For example, if you find an oddly shaped rock in a river, the shape has likely been caused by erosion, and is therefor a natural effect. If you find an oddly shaped rock on the bank, that someone has worked on it (it has scratches and chips) and it is vaguely shaped like a bird, you have an artifact. Usually it refers to something that was made by an earlier civilization, but that isn't necessarily the only meaning.
A computer can be refered to as an artifact of modern society.
Hope this helps.

You have seen the answers indicating that the term is "artifact," and that it refers to something created by humans.

This is basically the correct answer. It need not have any historical significance or any importance whatsoever. It need not be something old.

It has also come to mean something that seems out of place, such as a spot on a photograph that does not belong in the image. Another example is the hexagonal ring of light that appears on film when the camera is pointed at a light source. These, also are refered to as artifacts.

Artefact is the European spelling for artifact. An artifact is defined as anything made, modified, or used by humankind - I am an archaeologist believe me on this one.
