1) Broken or stuck cables, remove and see they slide easily.
2) The bit which slides to and fro to shift the chain is jammed - usually due to winding rubbish such a long grass in. Clean it out along with between the cogs.
3) There are screws which limit the travel to prevent the chain falling off - have they moved too far?
4) Is the chain on the at its limit on the cogs when the lever is at its limit? If not adjust it so it is.

Follow the shift cables with you eyes. Look at both ends of each cable for loose connections. If the cables are frozen/rusted you may try WD40.

Also there mechanism which changes the gear for you is called a de-railer. There is one at the crank (beteewn the peddles) and one near the center of rear wheel. Make sure no debris has gotten logged in them.

You can also use and all purpose oil to lubricate any moving parts on either de-railer.

Hope this helps!!

Make sure the cable to the derailleur isn't slipping. If so tighten the tension screw (it'll be obvious once you look). Make sure the chain guide is positioned properly.
