i dont doubt that it is biologically identifiable, but i just doubt whether it should be regared a gentic and unchangeable as it is by some. i was wondering whether an illness would be a more appropriate title even though it sounds a bit extreme

look for god's sake if people don't want people to question things then why go on a website solely for answering questions. Also, to the guy who was saying not to go down this road for legalities, get a grip or go and try and persecute gallileo for wondering if the earth revolved around the sun. It may have been a bit distasteful for asking such a controversial question but i was only trying to get some objective views on the subject, not turn this into some big row where everybody's getting offended left, right and centre. Let's get some perspective people!!

If your not gay, or not planning on becoming.
Why waste your thoughts, on what others are doing.
Worry about you.

Homosexuality is part of the diversity of human nature, just as left-handedness, freckled skin, and perfect pitch, are part of human diversity. ("Perfect pitch" is the ability to tell by ear alone whether a piano is correctly tuned.) Humanity beenfits greatly from diversity and flexibility, it's part of what makes us top species on the planet.

Any person who is gay or lesbian and at ease with it will confirm to you that it is indeed "real" -- if by 'real' you mean a feeling, a desire, a set of fantasies, an orgasmic high, etc, just like straight sex (or indeed unconventional types of sexual desires among straight people). Similarly, you may find bisexual people who report that they feel comparable satisfactions from gay and straight sex.... though i don't know if this has been scientifically researched.

Across time and cultures, homosexuality is only a problem in societies where the straight majority bmake it a problem.

To answerers asking 'is it genetic or learned'?, brain scientists say 'neither'. It depends on the hormones in the pregnant mother at a particular period in the pregnancy, see Pease book reference below.

Seligman says you can't change your actual sexual orientation, but you can choose who you have sex with. So a gay man, for example, can help himself to accept sex with a woman by fantasising a beautiful man's body while actually engaging with a woman's. (and vice-versa, as some straight men do in all-male environments such as prison)

Actually, for those of you who are saying it has been proven to be genetic, you are incorrect. It has been proven NOT to be genetic. This is demonstrated by the concordence rates of homosexuality in identical twins. If it were purely genetic, the concordence rate would be 100% since identical twins share 100% of their genes, but it is not, it is less than 50%. The concordence rate does, however, go up slightly as the shared number of genes between two people go up. So siblings have a lower concordence rate than fraternal twins, who have a lower concordence rate than identical twins. So, all of this means that there is a *genetic predisposition* to homosexuality, which means that certain environmental factors and events can influence the lifestyle of a person, resulting in homosexuality in some cases, but not all cases, where the predisposition exists.

That doesn't mean however, that there is no point, or that it is not real, or that it is a choice. What is the point? It makes people happy. It makes them feel fulfilled in a way that may be unknown or not understood by some people, but is just as valid as a heterosexual couple's needs.

good points tsbr
Why do some people always think their existence is superior to other people's?
Many heterosexuals are obsessed by homosexuality...they want to know about our sex lives all the time.
Im not interested in the validity of the lowly heterosexual.
Go obsess about your own people and give us all a break!
Stop putting people under a microscope...its really irritating and offensive. I knew I was gay as soon as you knew you were straight. What's different?
I have a few questions for you. They may sound familiar:

1.What do you think caused your heterosexuality?
2.When and how did you first decide you were a heterosexual?
3.Is it possible your heterosexuality is just a phase?
4.Is it possible your heterosexuality stems from a fear of others of the same sex?
5.If you've never had an intimate relationship with a person of the same sex, how do you know you wouldn't prefer a same-sex relationship?
6.If heterosexuality is normal, why are a disproportionate number of mentally impaired persons heterosexuals?
7.To whom have you disclosed your heterosexual tendencies?  How did they react?
8.Your heterosexuality does not offend me as long as you don't try to force it on me.  Why do heterosexuals feel compelled to convert others into their lifestyle?
9.If you choose to nurture children, would you want them to be heterosexual knowing the problems they may face?
10.The great majority of child molesters are heterosexuals.  Do you really consider it safe to expose children to heterosexual teachers?
11.Why do you insist on being so obvious and making a public spectacle of your heterosexuality?  Can't you just be what you are and keep it quiet?
12.Heterosexuals are noted for assigning themselves and each other to narrowly restricted stereotyped sex roles.  Why do you cling to such unhealthy roles?
13.How can you enjoy a fully satisfying sexual experience or deep emotional rapport with a person of the opposite sex when the obvious physical, biological, and temperamental differences between you are so vast?  How can a man understand what pleases a woman or vice-versa?
14.Why do heterosexuals place so much emphasis on sex?
15.With all the societal support marriage receives, the divorce rate is spiraling.  Why are there so few stable relationships between heterosexuals?
16.Do heterosexuals hate and distrust others of their own sex?  Is that what makes them heterosexual?
17.Why are heterosexuals so promiscuous?
18.Why do you make a point of attributing heterosexuality to famous people.  Does it justify your own heterosexuality?

Think.
Please....just think.
It's easy - listen , accept, understand. We are all the same!

Why? Why do you need to think about it? Just get on with your own life and let those who are into that kind of thing get on with it. That's what I do and so do the other 99% of the population.

If you want to think about something, consider what the meaning of life is. Then, when you come up with the answer please let me know because this has baffled me for years. I've thought about this rationally and used logic. But the more I think about it, the more un-answerable questions I come up against.

If you live in the UK, homophobic attitudes are actually illegal and can land you in trouble. Leave well alone. You wouldn't touch the soleplate of a hot iron would you? I hope that is a no btw.

Yes, heterosexual relationships accomplish many things:

Divorces clogging the court system. Unwanted children. Juvenile Deliquency. Clogged prison systems. Welfare. Food Stamps. Baby Health Care on public funding.

Give me a break.

Its not normal at all, and I for one am starting to get a bit fed up with the lot of them. They want everything a heterosexual couple have, the right to get married, the right to adopt children, the same benefit's any other couple has. The latest is Man City football club are making a big thing of welcoming them, what the hell has someones sexuality got to do with football. For goodness sake give us a break.

Interesting. So, unless it accomplishes something, it isn't real?

What about a pond? What does it accomplish?

What about a yo-yo? What does it accomplish?

Is a pond a 'mental oddity"?

Oh, wait. You mean the heterosexual relationships accomplish increased population? Hmmm. What if the hetero relationship is childless??? Is it then 'a mental oddity' and not 'legitimate'?

Or, conversely, is a homosexual relationship that chooses adoption more legitimate than a hetero one with no children??

Hmmm.

Interesting questions...

Do you watch the news or read the newspaper? Homosexuality has been proven by reputable scientists to be a genetic thing. Not everything has to accomplish some thing to be legitimate. Besides... in my opinion it does.... by giving other homosexuals an option for a fufilling loving relationship just like we heterosexuals have.

People don't born gay, they become gay, although no one knows how exactly. there are psychologists who say that sexuality can be changed after a long planed process, but i dont thing that anyone should change his sexuality. after all, breeding is not the only point of sex.

You're a mental oddity, an idiot who can type. Why hate on the gays so much? It's just a different kind of love. What's so bad about that?
