For a literary answer, check out J.R.R. Tolkien's essay "On Fairy Stories." Maybe spelling is "Faerie." Anyway, Tolkien believed in what he called the "eucatastrophe" as the most satisfying kind of ending. Not completely happy, not completely sad (Example is the ending of LOTR.) There's more to it than just this; read the essay to see for yourself.

Generally, readers prefer that the major issues in a story be resolved, usually to the benefit of the main character(s). It is lack of resolution that is most likely to offend readers, not whether the ending is happy or sad. A -completely- happy ending may not be realistic/believable for the plot you write, but if it has more positive than negative outcomes for the protagonists, it is still a good ending. No one can go through the several kinds of hell that fictional heroes often have to deal with and remain unskathed.

I like bitter-sweet endings. Because they reflect life. "good endings" are unrealistic, and even though it's only a story, it seems rediculous to write "They lived happily ever after" because I know it didn't happen. On the other hand, a "bad ending" is depressing.

Our Life is not all pleasure, amusement and ease. One need not give up the hope for good end as long as one is alive.Always consider carefully all possible difficulties and dangers before entering on or rushing into a course of action or enterprise.

If I truly want to feel as if I gleaned something worthwhile, I appreciate a though-provoking ending. The couple can get together or there can be heartbreak: As long as it's plausible or reveals something about life and human nature, rather than getting together just for getting together's sake.

the definitions of "good" and "bad" differ from person to person. a good ending to a person may be a bad one to another. So it can never be generalized.
