I'm not a Yankees fan, but Jeter is definitely an MVP candidate this season. He shouldn't be punished for Steinbrenner's spending - otherwise, you should eliminate Ortiz because Manny bats behind him. It's based on a player's performance and value to the team, and it shouldn't depend on economic circumstances.

I think Ortiz, Manny, and many others are candidates right now, but Jeter is definitely worthy of consideration and could win the award.

And I'm not a Jeter homer, either, as the questions I've asked here about him would attest.

No one from Boston or the Yanks will win it because the race is over. Whoever wins the Wild Card will get the MVP. If its the ChiSox, Jermaine Dye wins. If its the Twins, I think Justin Morneau, because even though Mauer has a high batting average, Morneau is also batting in the .300s and has 3 times the home runs and more RBIs.

Sadly, there are too many players on the Yanks for Jeter to win it. They have Damon, Abreu, Giambi, Cano, and ******. Ortiz won't win it because of his "illness" which is going to take like 2 weeks or so because they don't want to risk anything, and Manny definitely won't win it because the Red Sox are soooo far from the division and wild card, that you can't give it to him. Plus, he's a terrible fielder, but Jeter supposedly has bad range.

Here's how it should be:
1. Jermaine Dye
2. Justin Morneau
*(those 2 will depend on the Wild Card)*
3. Derek Jeter (they haven't had Matsui or Shef the whole season and they are 7 games ahead in 1st)
4. David Ortiz (7 games out, won't make the playoffs, will miss games cuz of injury = too many factors that will hurt him)
5. Manny Ramirez (same as Ortiz)

.356, 10 HR, 73 RBI, .434 OBP, .514 SLG, 8 SB
.326, 34 HR, 100 RBI, .442 OBP, .628 SLG, 0 SB
.319, 32 HR, 110 RBI, .372 OBP, .586 SLG, 2 SB
.337, 12 HR, 81 RBI, .413 OBP, .480 SLG, 26 SB
.315, 16 HR, 66 RBI, .359 OBP, .499 SLG, 43 SB
.287, 47 HR, 121 RBI, .400 OBP, .633 SLG, 1 SB

Two comments:

Don't say it's all about winning b/c no one is mentioning a single Detroit Tiger or Oakland Athletic and both teams lead their divisions comfortably.

Don't mention defense all that much, no one did when Jason Giambi, Juan Gonzalez, Frank Thomas, Mo Vaughn, Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa or Kevin Mitchell won theirs...if it's close, maybe, but really that's just crap from those trying to swing votes towards their guy.

Ok, now in order, those numbers are for:

Jermaine Dye
Joe Mauer
Manny Ramirez
Justin Morneau
Derek Jeter
Carl Crawford
David Ortiz

Sorry Yankee fans, but NO WAY Jeter is the MVP...he's a candidate, but if you consider yourself baseball fans you couldn't possibly give it to him over half of those guys...the numbers are just not there, and all of those players are on contenders except Crawford (thrown in to show you just how Jeter stacks up)...he's a hell of a leader and overall player, but without the all-stars around him, his numbers would be worse, and his numbers still don't look that good against the others...

Your MVP has to be either Dye or Ortiz...Manny's numbers are there but Papi is more "valuable" with his clutch hitting and Dye's numbers are slightly better on a better team right now...Morneau's close as well with his production but the low OBP hurts a little...

I can't stand the Yankees OR Derek Jeter for that matter. The guy is way overrated and is in my opinion not eligible for the MVP. Last year Ortiz was ripped off being given the MVP trophy from A-Wad ( I mean A-Rod) By the way how well did A-Rod do in the playoffs last year? He had only 1 RBI and batted well below .200. He's an overpaid stiff when it comes to the playoffs.

I think Jermaine Dye or David Ortiz would be considerable candidates for MVP this year. I hope that whoever it is this year that it isn't anyone from the F'n Yankees. I can't stand that team being on top year after year...enough already. They need to put a salary cap on those Bozos from the Bronx!!!

I totally agree with the poster jeter or no yankees should get the MVP unless there making less then 1 mill or setting some MLB records. I think MVP candidates teams should have there team in playoff contention, be able to field, and be in the top 3 in one of the following BA, HR, RBI, Runs.

Ortiz definately has the best offensive numbers but I doubt the red sox will make the playoffs and he's a dh will hurt him but I agree he's still number 1 candidate. I think Mourneau has to be number 2. He fields, he really doesnt have protection, mauer has no power and bats before him and doesnt even play every day. Jermaine dye is on a team with the most HR in all of baseball and he has other near mvp candidates surrounding him like Thome and Konerko. Mauer is only considered because of his BA and his defense and position but if you ask any twins fan who has a bigger impact on the team offensivly theyll all say morneau.

I prettymuch hate the Yankees as well. You said up there that you think Ortiz should be 1st and that is exactly what my brothers and I came to the conclusion of when we saw the nominees or whatever on Baseball Tonight. "Big Papi" (even though I hate that nickname) is a great player and as long as he's not on the Yankees, I'm totally fine with that. Urgh, they are so annoying and I hate how they don't have names on the backs of their jerseys. There are equal, if not better, short stops out there and I agree that, well, yeah, Jeter is on the list, but he shouldn't win MVP '06.

Have a nice day!

Imagine that... yankee fans think Jeter should be the MVP.

And Red Sox fans think Ortiz or Manny should be MVP.

And Twins fans think Mauer or Morneau should be MVP.

And White Sox fans think Dye or Thome should be MVP.

So basically, everybody thinks their guy should win it. I guess it'll go to the guy with the best numbers, who's performed best, and who's team has done the best.

Which means after the Yanks mop the floor with the Tigers and take over the best record in baseball... Jeter will be a lock.

Have you seen Ortiz or Ramirez in the line up lately? if boston doesnt make the playoffs neither of them deserve it. The only stand out stat that Mauer has is average. Jermaine Dye has the best case of competing for it, and Jeter acually does deserve the mvp, Yankees didnt replace anyone until the trade deadline and they were still in the playoff race then because Jeter kept them in with his clutch play.

Only Yankee fans think Jeter is a top twenty player in the league. He's good, but nothing close to an MVP.
