Yes. I hate having to constantly say, "No thanks, I'm just looking." Secretly, I feel happy if I slight them while they watch me pay for my purchase. As if to say, "See, I CAN do it without your help. Leave me alone next time!"

Having worked in retail for over 22yrs in both selling & nonselling positions, greet & approach is part of the job. While you may be bothered by this practice, peoples jobs do depend on this aspect. Its not all about sales, whether on commission or not, but unfortunately a large part of their reviews are based on that. A good salesperson will acknowledge you & see what your wants & needs are. If you are just looking, they'll let you do just that & let you know if you need help, that they're there.
I'd rather have someone around & not need them then having to hunt down someone when you do...................
Plus not everyone is there to actually "shop." Shortage is a big problem.

So after working at Best Buy for the last year, Im pretty sure I've got a grasp on this by now. You, good sir are the @ssholes us salesmen hate dealing with. I dont make commission off of your purchase so dont treat me like some dick who's trying to force you to buy something. If you're just looking then say so and I'll be more than happy to leave you alone. In fact, Id rather not help you because when you give me your nasty attitude I'd really rather put your teeth down your throat(if I wouldnt lose my job for it). So instead of being ignorant to an employee, next time trying being polite and watch the favor be returned.

I prefer it when the sales people come up to me. I don't like being ignored by a salesperson while I'm shopping. Some salespeople will stand in the same aisle with you for 5 minutes and won't ask once if you need help.
It's better than the salespeople who just stand there and gossip with their co-workers all day!

I'm not sure it's that simple.
For instance, some socialites might sue a retail store for not asking them that or for generally not being super-courteous to them.
In these times, people will sue for just about everything, so I think a lot of the excess politeness is just required for salespeople to fend off customer complaints and litigation.

Yeah, I know what you mean...sometimes it bothers me too...but then i will admit, there are also times when I wish someone would come up to me and help me but it looks like they are just too busy! And that really bugs me, because that makes me feel like they don't really care that I am there when I am in need of help...that makes me feel like spending my money elsewhere. So, I just tell salespeople politely that I am just browsing if they ever ask me...and i try not to let it get to me because if i do it will just annoy me! ya know?

I totally agree with you. I am in a store in my shopping and searching zone and then they snap me out of it and I forget what I was thinking or planning.
There is probably more to it than we all realize... it's probably part of the plan to make us forget to get half of what we came for so that we have to come back again later. Because, everytime I go to the store I end up getting a few non-essentials so more trips means more spending.

Then why not do all your shopping at completely impersonal stores, such as Wal-Mart. If you go into a small shop, the employees are usually required by their employer to greet and interact with customers. More people get offended if they go into a store and are not offered assistance.

I worked in retail for about 5 yrs. People are trained to do that. The motto is customer first. Believe me when I say that salesmen hate it just as much as you do. Salesmen know when people are their to shop vs just looking. But when your pushy manager is standing next to you have to follow all rules. And that means puting the customer first.

And YET, it is equally annoying when you NEED help, and you cannot find a salesperson anywhere. Find something important to gripe about.

My advice to you is to stop going to stores that way you don't get "Can I help you?" from a sales associate...besides pretty soon no one will go to a store any more because almost everything is now online.
