Twilight and New Moon by Stephenie Meyer are very good (stepheniemeyer.com)
I'd also recommend Tamora Pierce (the Immortals quartet, the Song of the Lioness quartet, the Circle of Magic quartet, Tricksters Choice, and Tricksters Queen)
Amelia Atwater Rhodes has written several good vamp books (In the Forests of the Night, Demon in My View, Shattered Mirror, Midnight Predator, Falcondance, Snakecharm)
what I like to do is go to a local bookstore and spend a few hours browsing their fantasy sectio

OMFG i love them too!
Okay. Firstly, for every vamp reader, you must MUST read ANNE RICE.
OMG. RICE is the VAMP QUEEN.
Heard of the vampire chronicles? Interview with a Vampire, The Vampire Lestat, Queen of the Damned... LEGENDARY!!!
and then there's Teresa Medeiros. Romance & Supernatural "After Midnight" is a wonderful read. It's not as dark as Rice's work, but it's just as wonderful, with a hint of love and mystery. The sequel is actually coming out this fall, October I believe. Wonderful! She's my personal favorite author.
If you're looking for other supernatural (i.e. Wiccan tales) then perhaps browse about Rice's other, less known, books, such as the witch chronicles... don't recall their titles as I have not read them myself, but I'm sure they're entertaining.
Personally, Rice's BEAUTY series is a must-read. A bit on the side of erotica, but very... beautifully-sculpted. Not for the weaker constitutions, as there is a good deal of explicit material, primarily sodomy, rape, bondage, BDSM, etc... but it really opens one's eyes to the world of literature that goes beyond the conventional. Truly inspirational, hints of magic, mystery, romance, history, etc.
OMG I almost forgot to mention Meg Cabot's MEDIATOR series. THOSE are my favorite, ranking up there with Teresa Medeiros's After Midnight. WOW. it's high school drama mixed in with death, tragedy, suspense, a tragic love between a ghost and a mediator, love triangles... VERY INTRIGUING. the ending was SPECTACULAR. This series spans over 6 books, but they're enjoyable reads-- each took a day just because they were so enthralling, LOVED IT!

Amazon/ Barnes & Noble have great selections. Look in the New Age section.
As far as authors go.....Anne Rice is a given. Pick up "The Historian."
Great book. For a different slant try Brian Lumley's "Necroscope" series.
I've read them all!

Read "I am Legend" by Richard Matheson.
It's about the last "non-vampire".
