It's the elements of the theme and/or plot, settings, and characters that defines a genre. Books of the same genre typically have things in common where these are concerned.

For example, science fiction is a genre (this is my favorite one, and so i am best acquainted with it). So how do you tell if a book is "science fiction"? Science fiction books generally (but not always) feature settings in the future, or in space on other planets. They often involve unusual or futuristic technology, or strange new phenomena that are looked at from a scientific point of view.

An example of a "science fiction" book would the "The Time Machine", by H.G. Welles (i use that because it's a book that most people are familiar with).

That "scientific point of view" thing is important, because that's what separates science fiction from another genre: "fantasy". Fantasy often involves mythical or magical settings, characters, creatures, and themes; it uses these as plot elements, but does not attempt to explain them in a naturalistic way. Things like dragons are wizards are something you might find in a fantasy book.

The archetypical fantasy book would be The Lord of the Rings.

And it goes on pretty much like that; unique facets of the plot elements, characters, settings, etc. that a number of books share defines a genre. Generally the qualifications are fairly broad; they encompass a lot of different, but related, things.

Here's a website about all the literary genres:

Genre has less to do with writing style and more to do with the nature of the plot or, in some circumstances, the historical period or social setting.
One example would be fiction versus non-fiction, but within both there are also genres.
In non-fiction there are histories, biographies, true crime, science texts and threatises, geographies, travelogues and like that.
In fiction: mystery, science fiction, fantasy, romance--which has its own sub-genres like historical, Regency, paranormal, Western and like that--horror, Western, paranormal, and so on.
Basically, genre is the essential type of story that is being told, and only partially HOW it is being told.
Hope this helps.

The term genre, though mostly applied to fiction such as horror, science fiction and westerns. It can also apply to non-fiction as well (biography, true crime and self-help).

When writing, you should consider who your target audience is.
