You might consider modifying your question a little bit. What size was it? Otherwise, you might not get a correct answer. Also, you can log on the web and type spiders. I don't care for any spider at all. This spider doesn't look harmful to me but it might be. Always watch for spiders with a dot on their body. The best idea is to submit this to the web site for spiders.

Lots and lots of orb weaver spiders out there!!
Check out the site below for some photos of them to see if one looks like yours, but the posting about "What's that bug" is a good idea. They may take some time to get back to you, though.

It looks somewhat like a garden spider but if I recall they have the stripes on their back as well. I haven't seen one for years so maybe their extinct. But that's the closest I can come up with! Here is a web page you can check out-http://www.dmns.org/spiders/id.html

It would have helped if you told us where you live. It looks like a female whatever it is. September is spider month, lots of females laying egg sacs.
