So come on and let me know, should I cool it or should I blow!

I'm on a barrier island ( Cocoa Beach ) and the last forcast puts Ernesto between Orlando and here tomorrow evening. We have provisions, candles, coolers, cook stoves, hurricane lamps, beer, flashlights, Rum ;-), extra batteries,
ect. ect,... we're all ready to "Hunker Down" but....

What would YOU do? Any experienced "riders on the storm" out
there? Advice? Recomendations? Warnings?

I'm kinda looking forward to it, Hurricane party and all, ya know?

UPDATE 8-30-02 5P.M. - 2100 U.T.C.
Tropical storm Ernesto.
Latitude 27.6 N. Longitude 80.8 W.
Moving N. @ 14 M.P.H.
(That puts it about 50 miles south of Cocoa beach. Do the math.)
HEAVY RAIN!! Wow! About 5 inches in less than an hour! Incredible! This is just a tropical storm. I can only imagine what a full fledged category 1 hurricane is like. So far so good. We have seen 35 M.P.H. winds, with gusts to ? Still have power, which is strange. We lose power in afternoon thunderstorms sometimes. Minimal damage so far. Some tree limbs down, loose shingles blowing around, ect, but nothing serious. Heavy rain! Just got back from the beach. The surf is about 6 to 8 feet. Pretty impressive considering it's normally about 4 feet at the most! Heavy rain and wind! The surfers are having a blast! Suprizingly there is a noticeable absence of thunder and lighting. Heavy rain! Did I mention the HEAVY rain? Wow!
More later, Tim.
P.S. They tell me the worst is yet to come!

I guess I'm amazed that you are actually taking the time to even write this question, when you should be in your car going the opposite direction. People tell you to wait till it's really bad and then leave? When I lived down there, I can remember that there are very few roads leaving that area and they were always jam packed with people like you who waited till the last minute to leave. Hmmmm....hard choice, isn't it? I guess if this experience will give you the thrills you seem to need in this life and if you actually live through it, you can tell your grandchildren someday just how stupid you were when they tell you that they are going to ride out a hurricane!

If you're confident that your house isn't going to blow away, go for it! My old roommate stayed at his house on the beach when Hurricane Isabel hit Virginia Beach. He said the cops came and recommended he evacuate, but he told them NO and stuck it out. They said to put his name and social security number on his arm, and on his house door, so if he or it blew away, they would know where to start looking. He and his house made it through just fine. Ernesto isn't supposed to be as harsh as Katrina was. But if the reports start saying that he's strengthening, then I would definitely get outta there.

I live in the mainland so there really isn't a need for me to evacuate. But as for you, I suggest you do leave just as a safety precaution. But if you feel confident that nothing too bad will happen and that you're properly equipped, then stay. ~young one~

Blah blah blah! There was so much hype over ERNESTO. There have been thunderstorms worse than this. Yeah it's been rainy today, but nothing to get all excited about.

Ernesto should be one of those "fun" storms. You need a place to go to ground, though, if the s hits the fan.
