Leave the snakes alone, and continue your research online. How would you like it if someone captured you, to ''study'' you? They should be studied in their natural habitat. Not captured and in a strange enviroment.

Catching garder snakes isn't actually that hard. They don't have poisonous bites even if they did bite you, and I've never seen one bite a human at all. They WILL pee on you, but so long as you wash your hands properly after handling them, you'll be okay. When you're handling it, be sure not to squeeze it too hard; like other small animals, they are easier to injure than you'd think.

If you want to keep it somewhere, then I would suggest putting it in a terrarium with a mesh lid on it. Snakes are pretty good at getting out of places, so you want to be sure there's no possibility of that happening. As for feeding it, I'd try slugs, as far as I know they make good snake food (slow, juicy, and fairly easy to find).

Use a pair of thick leather gloves and that should do you fine make sure that you have a small fish tank let say no smaller than a ten gal. put moss and a small tree branch or log so that it can clime on. You may want a much larger container than that it is up to you. Create a natural environment for it if you can, and when you go to catch it be sure not to harm it are be to ruff when you pick up. The leather glove should provide you protection in case it wants to bit you oh that is elbow length gloves.
Good luck be safe and be gental.

My dad and I used to go to the mountains on vacations, his technique to get a snake out of the way was: we would surround the snake, I would distract her while my dad would put a stick on her body, heavy enough to not allow her to move. The snake will be watching my movements very closely but ignoring my dad's, and then when the damn snake least expected it, pum!, he would grab her by the head not allowing her to move, the snake would curl up in my dad's arm but it is impossible for them to move their head after that, your thumb should be grabbing the top of her head firmly while your other fingers grab the "neck " and head under. Then you can put it in a jar or whatever. Again dad's snakes were very poisonous, yours is easy.

I hate snakes, my dad loves them and that's why instead of rolling them over with the car he would get them out of the way. EWWW

While I agree with the above poster and you should just leave it alone if you do insist on catching it the very best way is to reach down and pick it up. It may bite you but it really wont hurt very badly (probably will not even break the skin). You will have to get very used to such things if you actually want to study animals.

Pick it up as long as it's not agitated just behind the neck and centered on the body. It only takes a couple of minutes and it's tame by our standards. As tame as a snake can be anyway. They actually like being held and fed.

you dont. people need to understand that if you find it in the wild, to leave it in the wild. You dont know what you are getting into. it can be sick and pass it on to you. they may not catch rabies or parvo but wild reptiles do carry salmomnella which can make you really sick. And I don't know about you but the idea of explosive diarreah and the dry heaves at the same time does not sound like fun.As said from others, you can find ample research info on the internet.

Study it? LOL! Sure. I'd be willing to bet that you want a free pet snake...to play with and keep in some sort of glass house until it dies. Leave wild things in the wild. Respect nature.
