Sleepwalkers do such random things from going to the fridge, jumping out of windows, being violent or actually killing someone. What would cause a person to want to go to a window and jump or to be violent. I can see how a person would be thirsting and goes to the fridge for water or something but violent or self destructive acts are beyond my understanding. Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

Well the best I can answer is Do your dreams always make sense? Have you ever had that dream where you are falling and you don't know why? A sleep walker is acting out the dream. They don't always make sense. I have a family of sleep walkers. I think it can be amusing (as long as everyone is safe ) to talk to them and respond to the dream they are having. You get such weird responses like " I cant move this Tree so I have to mail it" What the H*** does that mean??

I think the sleepwalking is like sleep--in dreams sometimes things happen from random memory/interpretation of words. It's not acting out anything, I don't think. Example, the word "milk" comes up in the brain and multiple things could happen: the person could think of a glass of milk, a cow on a farm, squeezing a resource from someone...but it's not all representative of what the person wants--especially if the person hates milk!
My kid sister used to sleepwalk, and most of the time what she did made zero sense at all. She went outside or tried to, she went to cupboards and fridge for things she didn't care for....
I admit I could be cynical about the violent people though.

In my opinion, when someone is sleepwalking they are not aware of their behavior at all. Some people even walk down a flight of stairs without hurting themselves. A person is totally unaware of what their body is doing because they believe they are sleeping at the time the sleepwalking is occuring. Most people who do sleepwalk are not aware of the fact that they are sleepwalkers.

They are just acting out their dream. Dreams are random.
