Heres the simple answer "SHOW UP ON TIME!"
Here where I work , if you 1 to 4 minutes late you are on time.
5 minutes late will count as 15 minutes late on your card.
Ex. If you show up at 7:06, you are not getting paid until 7:15.
It is easier to figure everything to the nearest 15 minutes.

Subtract your start time in the morning from your clock-out time for lunch. This tells you how much time you work in the morning.
Subtract your clock-in time after lunch from your finish time at the end of the day. This tells you how much time you work in the afternoon.
Add the two amounts of time that you worked, and you have your total time for the day. (Don't forget to subtract the amount of time you have for unpaid breaks, if that's the case.)
Example: In at 8:05, out to lunch at 12:00; in from lunch at 12:35, out at 5:06.
12:00 - 8:05 = 3 hours and 55 minutes.
5:06 - 12:35 = 4 hours and 31 minutes.
3:55 + 4:31 = 8 hours and 26 minutes.
As stated by many others here, though... try to show up to work on time (including coming back from lunch)! Employers don't like it when you don't.

In answer to your question, you need to remember that subtracting amounts of time is not like subtracting whole numbers. 12:00 - 8:05 is not the same as 1200 - 805. The reason for this is that there are 60 minutes in one hour, and when borrowing or regrouping, you have to keep this in mind.
To subtract 12:00 - 8:05, you have to regroup... but since you're borrowing 1 hour (12 - 1 = 11), you have to add 60 minutes (00 + 60 = 60).
12:00 - 8:05 = 11:60 - 8:05. Now you can subtract.
11 - 8 = 3. 60 - 5 = 55. The amount of time is 3 hours and 55 minutes.

If you punch in 5 minutes early and punch out five minutes late you get an extra half hour of time on your paycheck when the conversion from minutes to dollars is complete. Found that loop hole a few years ago when an employee of mine did it.

You have to convert your hours and minutes to decimal hours and use a 24 hour time format. To convert minutes to hours, divide by 60. For instance: 5:06pm would be 17.10 hours. Then just subtract your starting time from your leaving time.

always allow yourself sufficient time to go to work
consider this. Say you had to report to work at 07:00am
allow yourself 2 1/2 hours shower, meals and travel
The travel is very important. allow yourself sufficient timeto arrive at work early at least 30 minutes prior to the starting time.
