I read an article in my local paper today about a 19-year-old "victim" who was evacuated to my city with her baby and boyfriend.

For the past year, she has stayed in a taxpayer funded shelter and since gotten pregnant again, while neither she nor her boyfriend have tried to get a job.

At what point do they need to take care of themselves instead of relying on me to support them?

I'm so glad you asked this question, because I was about to post the same thing. It's nice to know that you're not alone in thinking that a year is plenty of time to get back on your feet. Granted that the victims may have suffered emotionally, it should not prevent them from ever working again.

I used to be homeless at the age of 19 after a tragic incident with my family. Without having family or friends to turn to, I went to a shelter that gave me the opportunity to look for a job and save money (like most of them do!). I didn't have to pay any bills and got free meals, bus fare, clothes, toiletries, and a place to stay. After a month, I found a job and I was able to leave after 2 months when I saved enough money to get my own place. If I can do it, so can they!

While at the shelter, I saw LOTS of people "milking it" and not doing anything to better themselves. I mean, the shelter even included free daycare while the parents had the opportunity to look for jobs or go to work!

After my homeless experience, I now know it is NOT as difficult to get back on your feet like most people make it seem; therefore, I no longer have sympathy for Katrina victims who have been given a year to improve their lives.

My own personal opinion is that it's been long enough. There are plenty of jobs out there but people refuse to work at McDonald's or Burger King b/c it's "demeaning" - it's a job! When we relcoated to the south from Philly, i had to get a temp job until i found a permanent job. I didn't want to take the pay cut, but temping was better than no income, you know? Granted, i still had a house and all my belongings, but that's not the point i'm trying to make. We have a lot of displaced katrina folks living in the Memphis area - the crime rate has nearly tripled this year and guess where the finger is pointing - i think time to stop the free ride and ship them back home.

Houston Texas has the majority of Katrina evacuees, their crime rate has sky rocketed, 48% increase, 18% murder, drugs, etc... all related to Katrina people, frankly I am tried of the victim mentality, free rent and utilities for i year, food stamps, medical, heck in a year with no bills to pay i could have gone back to school and gotten a certificate degree of some sort. Human trash is human trash, the welfare system is killing this country. The founding fathers had a system that worked great. No work, No food. so call your congressman and lets raise some Hell on Welfare and the people that it supports.

The problem with your question is that it asks about the general and then focuses on the specific. This women, baby, and boyfriend do not accurately represent all of the Katrina victims. There are legitimate people out there who are trying to get back on there feet.

Another thing to think about is some of the emotional effects of Katrina. Have you ever thought about why it is that that women has been located to where she is? That is because all of her family was probably killed in this disaster. While you were sitting cozy in your trailer for 5 days she was feeding her baby anything she could find while president bush was playing golf.
Granted she had not made the right decisions in life however you don't know her.

Well I understand what you are saying but there were and are many victims of Katrina. The sad part comes in when people rely on the help of others when they do not even help themselves.

I agree. They are using this as a vacation opportunity. Never in my life have i gone more than 1 month without working. (i started working at age 9 at my father's general store)

We complain about katrina victims yet we forget all the inner city jerks that stay at home, make babies, live in cheap housing with foodstamps yet drive BMW's!!!!

Lazy bastards. I hate em all!

well seeing that i too was in a flood and homeless for over 6 weeks(luckily my mom put my family up) i got assistance from FEMA in that matter and that help was enough to get me back on my feet this particular person seems to be milking it for what it is worth and possibly they lived off the system to begin with they ll get whatever they can get needing or not needing and as long as someone cares they'll continue it they need to get an education and a job and support theirselves

Chances are, most of those who are still draining the system, were already doing it prior to Katrina. Many of these people are professional parasites. They need to be given an ultimatum, to sh it or get off the pot!

It's kind of "Atlas Shrugged" come to life isn't it? Because YOU can work YOU "should" take care of someone that "can't". Bunch of garbage if you ask me. People need to get over themselves, quit crying about it and move on already. Crap happens to people every day. If we all sat around crying about it, there would be no one doing anything.
