Nothing. The democrats want a large base of voters, perhaps 10%, that are enslaved to the entitlement programs. Then everytime elections come around they roll up in a bus, give out $10 bills and show everyone how much the democrats have done for the people.

This question does not apply as a Democratic nor Republican issue. The unemployment rate is controlled by the FOMC, which is non-partisan in theory at least. The Federal Reserve uses the unemployment rate to control inflation. If either a Democratic or Republican president magically does something to create more jobs, the FOMC will tighten up the money supply, as they have for the last 17 months, to increase the unemployment rate and cool down the economy. It's a stupid policy, if you ask me.

Well, since the only demoncrats I know are Republicans, he would probably do what Bush did, and sign a bill eliminating 3 million American jobs, and reward American companies for farming out jobs to India.

I think we need to stop outsourcing jobs, moving entire companies overseas and paying their workers mere pennies while charging us the same prices, raise minimum wage, put our foreign policy back on track so we become a country people want to do business with again, give small business owners more of an incentive to start new businesses, have affordable health care for everyone so that entire burden doesn't fall on companies alone.

A question some of the most brilliant of people have never been able to solve.
It is a fact of Capitalist systems that there is rich, sometimes a middle class, working poor and poor unemployed. It is how the systems functions and to eliminate any part of it would change it to Socialism or the 'C' word.
Someday man will lose his parochial behavior of greed and desire to equally share how fortunate he/she may be.
Is it not what Jesus of Nazareth, Mo hammed,Buddha preached ?

Again I can't speak for "demoncrats" but it is obvious job creation is the answer.
I also believe it would be more cost effective to guarantee paid education for ALL people that seek it.
Then they could get quality jobs & be productive citizens & support themselves & their own families & support the charities of their choice.

I notice several of the people answering bring up "welfare". WTF is welfare? I know there is the WIC programs to provide a limited amount of food etc to under-employed women with small children & "food stamps" - a very limited program providing a small amount of food for the un- or under-employed.
But other than that, what are "welfare programs"? I've often wondered but I truly don't know! I plead ignorance!

They start up new government programs with huge bureaucracies. All those redundant employees are then drawn from the worst of the labor pool and now have jurisdiction over everyone else.

Create more useless, meaningless government jobs, ultimately costing the taxpayers more money. Or change the time period in which you can apply for unemployment (therefore tweaking the numbers).

Sad to say, liberal republicans have used this too.

Punish those who hire illegals and then (involuntary wince from all greedpublicans) RAISE THE MINIMUM WAGE!!!!!!!!!!!

A few extra jobs will also be created through the rolling back of the tax code to around, say, 1997 levels.

hmm...Dr Z has a good point...and technically when you are on welfare you are somewhat employeed by the government.
you job duties consist of finding a job (in theory, bur rarely happens)...so I guess including the welfare recipeints with those that have real jobs could be a way of lowering the unemployment rate.
