If you're in the US, there are many great cars. One that looks nice, is affordable, has decent power, works well with a family or singles is the Chevy Malibu Maxx.
But there are soooo many things that only you can decide about the car you want. You're gonna have to do some shopping!

Assuming you're not looking for a truck, SUV or similar, and noting that you don't mention a price range, here are some candidates:
BMW 5-series (with smallest 6-cylinder)
Infiniti M35
Honda Accord V6
Hyundai Elantra
I drive a 2001 BMW 525 sedan, and also own an Infiniti Q45. I'm getting close to 30mpg in the BMW, it's the best driving car I've ever owned, and comfortably fits five. Because it's a RWD car, and care has been taken regarding weight balance (for instance, battery is in trunk), it handles great.
A good friend has an M35, it is a much better car overall than the Q, in my opinion. I'm told the Nissan V6 is currently the most reliable engine in commercial production, and of course the fit and finish of the Infiniti is excellent.
The Accord V6 has plenty of room, surprising amount of HP, and is one of the most popular cars in the US for a lot of reasons.
Finally, the Hyundai is an incredible value of the money. I wouldn't have considered them until my wife wanted a small SUV, did a ton of research and selected their Tucson - the most reliable, highly rated small SUV by J.D. Powers. You at least ought to test drive and consider the Hyundai to round out your choices.
Hope this helps.

The shape of the body and looking cool are highly subjective so you may have to make a decision on that yourself. But for the other stuff you should check out vehix.com under the comparison link as they allow you to directly compare different models from different years on all types of quantitative features.
If you do need to comfortably (not crammed in) carry 5 people then you may end up with a full size car or a full size suv.

depends on your insurance group i'd say. obviously a Ford Focus is bigger and better than a Citroen Saxo, but if a fully comp insurance quote for a Focus means you'll be eating bread and water for 5 years it's not the best car for you.
