I believe that it has something to do with the 'name' of the ranch. Most working ranches are in rural areas and are businesses. There aren't many...if any...street signs out in the countryside, so when people need to come and recieve product they know they are at the right ranch and not the one 2 miles from it.

So delivery trucks or those taking the animals away for slaughter can get in and out. A shorter arch wouldn't work.
