Beginning an exercise program can be as simple as taking a 20 minute walk. As time goes by, increase your speed and the intensitiy of your walk. If the weather doesn't agree with you, drive to a local mall and walk a few laps over there. As your fitness improves start researching other forms of exercise that might interest you, whether at a gym, or with a group, or videotapes....whatever will work for you.

Hey there
First of all, don't panic, it can be done.
1) Check out www.fitday.com for your daily calorie requirements. Increasing your exercise (or starting some!) will subtract from your total and create the deficit that will start you losing - you may need to eat MORE calories, not less!
2) Beach Body (www.beachbody.com) has some great workout tapes - I use Power 90, where you alternate an aerobic workout with a weight lifting workout - it's fabulous, and it's great for a beginner. I was! The strength training made all the difference for me.
3) Walking is a great, easy to start exercise. Just a little each day is going to help - and the more you do, the more energy you have - and the more you want to work out! Swimming is also good, as are belly dacing and tae bo - they're all aerobic/cardiovascular, with resistance training thrown in.
4) Eating the right amount of calories is great - but you need the right KIND of calories too. Check out Eat Fat Lose Fat by Sally Fallon from your local library - if they don't have it, try Nourishing Traditions (*also by Sally Fallon). They're also available for purchase at Chapters, Amazon and EBay. Go low on starchy carbs like bread and potatoes and rice, cut out as much processed sugar as you can and don't eat junk! There's also a yahoo group of other people who follow Nourishing Traditions - it's called discussingnt
5) Motivation is key - it can be really depressing to look in the mirror sometimes, huh? I had to remember - I might not look fabulous today, but it's all going to add up. I was actually ashamed to go for walks and have people see me as fat - but there are lots of people out there who don't even TRY to be healthy. You can do this! You're worth it! You won't believe how much easier it is to do EVERYTHING!
A tip for when that chocolate bar looks too good to resist - whenever I was tempted I would (subtly) touch that body part that I wanted to lose weight from - in my case mostly my tummy - and remind myself that I needed to keep doing what I was doing.
If you're looking for someone to keep you "accountable", contact me at the link under my avatar. I could use a kick in the pants sometimes too - like right now when I'm online instead of working out :-P

Watch what they do on the biggest loser and follow that (only in more moderation) Exercise is crucial to increasing your metabolism but remember that you will need to consume fewer calories than you burn in order to lose any weight. Also don't be surprised if your weight loss in inconsistant, muscle weighs more than fat and as you get into shape you will be gaining muscle. Finally, this is a lifestyle change, you cannot simply lose weight then go back to your old ways and expect the weight to stay off. Occational indulgences are ok but they need to be the exception to your new eating habits not the rule.

I'm not sure if this will help you, but when I joined a gym, and I couldn't afford a personal trainer, as I was on the cardio machines, I would watch people using the machines to see how they do it, and then I would try them. That way you kind of already saw how they work. Try that. Unless of course, you just want to do cardio, but you should do a little weight training. It will help you lose weight quicker.

I used a personal trainer for a while and she told me the trick to losing weight and not getting bored with the work out change to a different machine at the gym every 15minutes. Before you know it you've completed a 1hr workout.
The machines I find that work the best for calorie burn are the eliptical cross trainer, treadmill, stair master, ab crunch machine. Just remember as much as you want the results now, they dont come super quickly. you have to be persistant and have paitence.

You don't need a fancy personal trainer, or even any exercise equipment. Walking is a great starting exercise, and swimming is one of the best exercises there is, using all your muscle groups. Good luck!
