yes i have tried my brighten and darken buttons,
has this happened to anyone else.

The back light is burned out...you can replace it, but you might need to get a whole new LCD. If it is under warranty you can have it replaced for free.

There is a switch when you collapse the notebook that automatically turns the monitor off. Usually a very small switch that is triggered by a small extrusion from the screen. Make sure it's not stuck.

You can try pluging the laptop into a desktop moniter to see if it is the LCD's fault. If it is your best option is to send it in for repairs.
