I've only got one day in Penang before heading off to Langkawi - what do you recommend?

penang got lots of good food. remember to try their penang laksa, its famous. lol
the one nearby the pagoda is the best.
& the "tau sar piah" also very famous.
temple, shopping, beach... there is so many things to do. 1day is not enough.

Day 1:
go and check in the nearest hotel to the airport . Do not check-in hotels in Georgetown as you may get caught in heavy traffic the next morning and may miss flight to Langkawi
take a taxi ride to Georgetown and spend your time walking along PenangRoad for shopping, souvenir, food
Then take a trishaw ride to historic Esplanade (called Padang Kota by locals)
Take a taxi ride (2 ~3 hours) to go around the island for sightseeing. You may ask the taxi driver to suggest few good tourist spots along the journey such as Gurney Drive, and beautiful beaches at Tanjong Tokong and Batu Feringghi. Believe me they are friendly.
Then return to the hotel by evening, have a good sleep.

Day 2: Langkawi

Take the funicular train up Penang Hill. Fantastic view of the city.

penang laksa, nasi kandar, rope walk, gurney drive, gurney plaza, batu feringghi, national park, war museum, komtar, penang hill furnicular railway, fort cornwallis, ferry, penang bridge, chulia street.

Choose one of those marvellous beach hotels and spend a day there. A lot of the hotels round the beach area have their 'own' private beach. It's relaxing.
