Jihad is an Arabic word that means "striving in the way of God." This striving can take a number of forms, including the daily inner struggle to be a better person. However, jihad is often used to refer to an armed struggle fought in defense of Islam.
The root word of Jihad (JHD) implies more than Holy War. It signifies a physical, moral spiritual and intellectual effort. There are plenty of words in Arabic denoting armed struggle, such as (harb) which means war, (sira'a) which means combat, (ma'araka). which the Qur'an could have used if war was the intended meaning of this struggle. Instead Jihad a richer word which has a range of connotations. The Jihad is not even one of the five pillars of Islam. Jihad is a moral, spiritual struggle to achieve excellence.
Only a war fought against injustice, oppression and persecution can be termed as Jihad, provided that it also meets all the other requirements and satisfies all the conditions that the Shari`ah imposes upon Jihad.

It is Arabic for "holy war." In the Koran (a.ka. Quaran), the Muslim equivalent of the Holy Bible, fighting in a Jihad is the only sure way to get in to heaven guaranteed. There are other ways but they do not guarantee you getting in to heaven; it only improves the chance of getting in.

Jihad, sometimes spelled Jahad, Jehad, Jihaad or Djehad, is an Islamic term, from the Arabic root ("to exert utmost effort, to strive, struggle"), which connotes a wide range of meanings: anything from an inward spiritual struggle to attain perfect faith to a political or military struggle to further the Islamic cause. Individuals involved in the political or military forms of jihad are often labeled with the neologism "jihadist".
Jihad has been classified either as al-jihÄd al-akbar (the greater jihad), the struggle against one's soul (nafs), or al-jihÄd al-asghar (the lesser jihad), the external, physical effort, often implying fighting.
Jihad of the heart/soul (jihad bin nafs/qalb) is an inner struggle of good against evil in the mind, through concepts such as tawhid.
Jihad by the tongue (jihad bil lisan) is a struggle of good against evil waged by writing and speech, such as in the form of dawah (proselytizing), Khutbas (sermons), and political or military propaganda.
Jihad by the pen and knowledge (jihad bil qalam/ilm) is a struggle for good against evil through scholarly study of Islam, ijtihad (legal reasoning), and through sciences (such as military and medical sciences).
Jihad by the hand (jihad bil yad) refers to a struggle of good against evil waged by actions or with one's wealth, such as going on the Hajj pilgrimage (seen as the best jihad for women), taking care of elderly parents, providing funding for jihad, political activity for furthering the cause of Islam, stopping evil by force, or espionage.
Jihad by the sword (jihad bis saif) refers to qital fi sabilillah (armed fighting in the way of God, or holy war).
Jihad of peace refers to the struggle to make peace in the world, everywhere and anywhere.
