Easiest way is to get something like Itrip. I've got it and it works rather well.

If it only has an electricity plug and a headphone plug the only way to get the iPod heard thru that stereo is with an FM tranmitter like this one:

However this will lower the quality of the sound tremendously. I reccomend buying some good computer speakers and connecting it directly to your iPod.
If want to use your stereo because it has a remote, then just get a remote for your iPod like this one:

If you have a Nano you'll need one like this:

Don't buy a lame docking station, they are overpriced.

Get one of those Tape things that has a cord and at the end there is a mini stereo jack that can be plugged into your IPod. You can find these at Walmart for about $10 - $20. Then set your stereo to play Tapes and press Play. Then you're set... just select songs and BOOM! MUZIC!

the easier way is to get a cable with stereo haedphone jack on end, than you connect 1 end to the ipod and the other to your stereo headphone jack. (if you stereo is using a bigger headphone jack, just get a 1/4" adaptor)

if your stereo has no white, red & yellow holes (RCA connection) then your stereo has no input line and therefore you cant play your ipod (or any other external device) on that particular stereo
