They fought together to win independence from the British colonial rulers. The british regime created a distinguished and previleged class to help their administrative machinery which was run entirely in English language. To reject the injustice done to common people, "sinhalese only" slogan was put forward by the majority of the people who are sinhalese. In this process, they forgot the tamil language, but they did not intend to consider tamil as an inferior language. However, after they realised the mistake, the rulers tried to correct it, but the attempts were foiled by the opporsition. However, now the people have accepted the equality. Other than in the north of the country, every university (free education) is made available to people belonging to any ethnic group, and lot of tamil students are studying in south.
