This happened two years ago and it was very painful. I'm not in pain yet but my knee keeps getting bigger each day for the last week or two. The surgery didn't seem to help last time. Frequent painful needle drainages didn't help. The only things that helped some was a cortisone shot and some prednisone pills.

Please suggest something other than surgery if possible.

Ice it and elevate it above your heart first of all.
Make sure you don't have gout in it, if you do get allopurinol and colchicine to treat.
Septic knee usually means going on antibiotics not just geting prednisone... so go in and get it treated before it becomes painful.

First for the pain, herbs that may be used as food supplements:
St. John's Wort
Kava Kava
Arnica homeopathic treatment
Bach's Rescue Remedy
Remember to read the label of these products for correct use.
*You can get these at any health food stores.

Yoga will help knee injuries. Gentle yoga poses such as:
Corpse Pose- Lie flat on your back and quiet the mind for about 5 min.

Gentle knee circles- Sit up in a comfortable seated pose. Extend the knee out slowly. Take the right ankle to the top of the left knee. Begin slowly lifting the right knee in a circular motion or in an up and down motion. Do the same with the other knee. Breathing is very important.

Leg Extensions- Sit up in a comfortable seated pose. Bring one knee to the chest slowly and extend it all the way down, straightening the knee. Then do the opposite knee.

Ankle rotations- Circle both ankles about 3 minutes on each side.

This personalized knee yoga session should last up to 20 minutes. Time yourself and be gentle.

That was the best thing that ever happened to me was getting that surgery done to my knee. Please don't be afraid of that surgery it isn't as bad as you think. I thank the Doctor ever time that I see him, That has helped me alot. I wouldn't say this if it isn't true but I went through it in march and my knee has felt alot better and I don't regret it one bit. If I would need it for my other knee I would do it in a Heart Beat. Good Luck I will deep you in my Prayers

My best advice is go to onto Yahoo Answers and get a non-surgical solution from a 7 year old boy.
