Im an old fashioned mom. He is very fit from playing outside he talks to plenty of children and grown ups and has a well rounded life. I wanted to let him talk to others with different lifestyles and beliefs.
Me by his side being ever watchful. Also discussing with him things that come up.

Give him an email and all his FAMILY's addresses. He can talk to or email them whenever he wants.

My kid is not in that stage yet but I am concerned with how to deal with this. To block him/her off the net as some people are suggesting seems stupid... sure, you don't want a kid who sits all day and plays on the computer, PS or watches TV, but you also don't want him/her to become an outcast. Besides, it has been proven that these activities help intellectual and coordination development, so it's not like "playing out side" all the time is hands down the best activity.

But, while you do have to warn your kids about the dangers of life, I am completely lost of at what point you should introduce topics like, child molesting, rape, abduction etc. I imagine that at 11 the topic has already been brought in by peers, so you could address it an give information that would actually easy some of his worries. And about net surfing, the best is have him always use it supervised and/or only talk to people they know in person because you never know who you are really talking to (which is probably something us grownups should also be doing, lol).

Well, I think every one is lost when it comes to this subject, great question.

There is no safe place on the net. But you can get advice by going to Net Nanny and other "Protection Programs"
Your best bet is to educate your son about what is out there...you will do him a diservice if you keep things hidden...go to cyberangels.com for some pretty good info on internet safety.
I know it's scary....I have an online business and twin 11 yr old boys so they are always online.
Good Luck

YOu can download AOL IM and then limit it to ONLY People on the list can chat with him. Get family and trusted friends on the list.

What others have said is true. Anyone can say they are a 'school' friend. Just be sure (which I'm sure you've thought of) no real names, addresses, school or ANY identification that would link him with who he really is.

Sad that we have to think this way, but there you ahve it.

I would recommend a MySpace, but I found it a serious waste of time compared to this site. That's why I abandoned my MySpace.
Of course, there are a always chat rooms.Maybe get him a profile on Y! Answers.

Sorry, but there really is no "safe" place to chat. Anyone can lie about their age. But hopefully by this age, he knows how to pick his friends.

there is no safe place to chat. let him do so at good youth sites but do not let him chat without you in the room or occasional glances over his shoulder.
talk with him about what is acceptable chat and what is not. tell him about the dangers and be honest so he will come to you if there is a problem or suspicion of inappropriate behavior.

Agreed, there isn't any I know of. Even the 'legitimate' ones will have freaks trolling it.

If you find one that is decent like the link posted by the user above, I would STILL supervise my child during their internet axctivities no matter what.

There isn't any place. Anyone can say that they are 11 too. Anyone can lie and get into children's chat rooms. Your safest place is the playground or a local park while you are there watching.

There's not many but if your son is smart he will know not to give out his full name, give the city/state where he lives he won't have a picture of him with something that hasclues to where he lives.

If you just stay on your toes you'll do fine.
