Internal is by far the best. I have two of these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductCompare.asp?SubCategory=5&CompareItemList=N82E16827152056%2CN82E16827152055 and they are great. Plus, they come with Nero, by far the best burning software ever made.
Sony and Benq also makes good drives. Lite-On used to, but their quality seems to have taken a major nose-dive in the last year.

Honestly.. Internal drives are cheaper and use IDE connections with the 4 prong Modular power connecter in the back. I'd suggest an internal to save some money... Make sure you have an open IDE channel for it though. If you don't, then get an external one.
I usually get Lite-on drives. It's a company that I trust. I got my external DVD burner and my internal DVD burner along with my other DVD-Litescribe+duel layer DVD+/- Burner + DVD-Rom burning drive.
Check out online retailers like:

Hope this helps.

Internal all the way, provided you have an empty slot for it. Look at your computer, is there a blank cover above or below your current CD-ROM? if so, get an internal. if not, you can always take the CD-ROM you currently have out and replace with a DVD/CD combo no problem. Internal are significantly less expensive than an external.
Sony makes good one, but really, there are so many oput there. Avoid the bottom proced ones. I would say stick with a medium priced one. You can always get the model number and look it up on CNET.com for reviews.

The BenQ DW1655 Dual Layer DVD±RW Writer w/ LightScribe has gotten some very good reviews, is pretty cheap, and has lots of features including dual layer and lightscribe for labelling:

If you have the space in your case, I would recommend Internal versus External. Internal is generally easy to connect and takes up less space whereas external you need to be careful about knocking around.

It depends on whether you have bought it recently or not. If you bought it recently then it is likely to still be under warranty and to open the case to put a new drive in would violate that warranty so external would be best.
If it is out of warranty or you aren't bothered about the warranty then internal is always better.
I have always found NEC drives to be great.

internal is cheaper/faster - just need to open the computer up (presuming you have open bays on the front).
