all of a sudden my 7 week old is screaming like he's in pain even when we're holding him and he's gnawing on his hands and my fingers (and he's not hungry) but I always thought babies didn't teethe until after 3 months. Could he be teething or could it be something more serious?

He could either be teething or possible have colic. Does it only last a couple of hours everyday around the same time? If so it's probably colic then. My little sister got her first 2 teeth in when she was only 3 months old. So anythings possible

Chances are really slight that she is teething. Of course, it is possible but,it's much more likely to be something else that's bothering her. The best thing for a teething baby at that age however, would be to let her nurse as often as possible. She may not suck ahrd or really be hungry but, the comfort for her mouth is what she is after. If you are not nursing -- let her have a pacifier or let her suck her hands or fingers as she may find that really comforting. Some babies that age still ahven't "found" their fingers and that's why you may need to you a pacifier. Babies can also be teething for a long time before any teeth show up -- and the pain from it can come and go and subside and then reappear later on without any teeth having to show for it. The acute stages of teething will only last for a short time, usually.

Yes it is very possible. My son started teething about 2 months old but didn't pop out the first tooth(actually he got 2 at a time) until he was about 5 months old. He got 2 more just a couple weeks later. So yes, your child could be teething

no its not too young. every baby is different and i had one get a tooth at 9 weeks i would bring it up to his doctor. but i doubt it is something serious, babies chew on everything for a while. get the gel filled teething rings and freeze one for him to suck.. it IS very possible teething is occurring.

It's not common, but my mother said I got my first tooth at 2 months. I would call his pediatrician and find out what you can give him to see if it helps, whether it be orajel or tylenol, etc... My daughter's pediatrician recommended tylenol - but no otc meds should be given to an infant without consent of your pediatrician.
