I sound like a kid about this problem, but okay, Im not stupid in any way and i am very far in my career and went all the way in school but i cant stop talking like a valley girl. Its not real bad. I have excellent grammer and talk in a professional way, but I cant get the valley girl voice out. (its not that bad. I get annoyed with people who go overboard) But you can tell when i talk a little. I say, 'like' a lot and 'oh my god..' And my voice kind of does that up and down thing when telling a story. Its just the area i grew up in. Everyone was so excited, energetic and very sweet. All my friends make fun of me and laugh. Its funny, I laugh too, but it really bothers me. I try sooo very hard to not talk like that and practice but it just fades right into my accent. I guess it the saying You can take the girl out of the Valley, but you cant take the valley out of the girl. Well, you really CANT! Any suggestions?

It's sort of like trying to ''lose'' a Southern Accent....bottom line? You shouldn't, hon....it's what makes you you....everything you said about your professionalism speaks for itself. Saying a few ''likes'' and ''OMG'S'' and accentuating when you talk is NOT going to detract from your intelligence, believe me....it's your given culture and you need to keep it and not become a ''generic'' just to fit in with the status quo.

Like,oh my god just STOP. Try to make yourself conscious of it. I've been told I say RIGHT alot when i'm having a conversation, and someone commented about it, and now every time I say RIGHT I think about it, and try to substitute another word.

And by the way Valley Girl is one of my favorite movie. So be glad we don't hang out together i'd be asking you to talk like a valley girl. lol

I find that people tend to talk like the people that they're around...do you still live where you grew up? I suppose it will just take a lot of practice...you really can't change who you are overnight...have lots of conversations with a close friend and ask them to correct you when you start saying something that you don't want to say.

Come to TEXAS, I can help you change your accent. This one is fun because its funner to see other people try to guess how south you are from. Oklahoma is pretty bad too. Good luck.

Diction classes or move to another part of the country like the midwest. That will help.
