~Since you were at your doctor's yesterday and your doctor told you that your cervix was short, why didn't you ask your doctor this question? Wouldn't his or her information be more reliable than YahooAnswers? If you forget to ask your doctor something, you can always call the office and ask.

So when the kid is born, are you going to ask your peditrician for information or the voodoo lady down the hall?

Think about it...for your kid's sake.

The same thing happened to me. I am 30 weeks pregnant. This was discovered when I was 201/2 weeks. I have to go every other week for a cervical check. This is where they check to make sure that the cervix has not decreased in size. I am currently on bedrest until 34 weeks. The doc put me on bedrest, because he is afraid if I continued to work, that I might go into preterm labor. All I can do is relax and sit around the house. Do not have sex because this can open your cervix more. If you wonna talk or have any other questions email me. Remember the longer the baby stays inside the better. Yes a baby can survive now, but staying in until at least 34 weeks is better.

Not a good thing. The cervix on a pregnant person can be felt and its usually about 2 cm long and closed. It also has a mucous plug in it to keep bacteria from getting up there. In labor it sarts to get thinner as more pressure is applied to it by the contractions. It finally thins out to about 1/4 cm and then starts to open up. If your cervix is painlessly thinning already at 29 weeks it may mean that you could deliver early. 40 weeks a baby is well done. Its like cookies they take 10 minutes but each minute makes a difference between a baked cooking and one that is not finished on the inside. If your abdomen is getting hard and soft and hard and soft those painless contractions could be causing your cervix to thin. You need to tell your Dr so he can give you a drug called brethine that stops those painless contractions and there fore stops the cervix from thinning and opening up prematurely.

If you are dehydrated your uterus will react by having contractions. Drink 8 glasses of water a day to keep this from happening

your at 29 weeks now which means that if you go into labor they probably wont stop it because the baby will be able to live out side of you and in the world. Don't worry to much about unless the doc told you and explained to you that you should be worried for one reason or another. but with your cervix shorting that is a good thing when you are at like 39 weeks. you just may have the baby sooner then you thought! but that's OK just research ever thing that you can about preterm delivery. be aware of what can happen it Willl help you in delivery room! the more aware of things you are the easier things wil be.

yeah that's not a very good thing. Did he tell you to go on bedrest or to lower your activity level. I have what they call an incompente cervix. Which means nothing I really do is going to stop it from shrinking over a period of time. They did a cerclage with me but as long as you aren't dilating they probably wont do that. Good luck and take it easy. My son was born at 33 weeks and 3 days and now I'm pregnant again and I'm 26 weeks along and my cervix is starting to shrink again so I actually expect to have this one early also.

Oh also just so you know the doctors told me that every child i have this would happen to me you might want to find out from you provider if the same is true for you.

I would ask your Dr. whether or not a cerclage is recommended. If you have a history of preterm labor, then a cerclage might help. I had one, whenever my cervix started to shorten, at 20 weeks, but I had a history of preterm labor. The cerclage will help hold it together, unless you go into an intense labor pattern. I can tell you from my point of view that cerclage gave me peace, even when I did start labor, early. Did you ask if it has always been short, if so, then the Dr and yourself will probably have nothing to worry about. If I were you I would contact your Dr.'s office and ask the nurse. Good Luck!

Don't worry for one thing but that may mean that you might have to have the baby by cise section and that's really nothing because you lose most of the baby fat that way and it's an easier labor. My aunt had one a few years ago and now she that's all she wants to do with the next babies she decides to have in the future. so don't worry so much because your cervix could open when it's time or you could have it the other way which isn't that scary.

Well that means that it is thinning out and that it may not be able to hold the baby in. Sounds scary and it is if you were only 22 weeks pregnant (like my wife was). We were on bed rest till 30 weeks and had the baby.. At 30 weeks the baby is very strong and has little chance of any issues and we had her home 4 weeks later. In your case you may be put on bed rest and may have the baby early. Maybe in the next 4 weeks. I am sure you doctor has planned another appointement to check your cervice. Just rest assured that your baby will be in fine shape and at the stage you are in now 30 weeks + will give you little issues.

The doctor would let you know if there is cause to worry. He may just be preparing you for the idea you that you may need to take it easy until you deliver. If doc didn't mention that you should be concerned, then don't be. Just relax and take care of you and your baby!
