With the 80ies long gone and the band members now both in their 50ies you should imagine that it's time for them to retire. What makes them so successful even 20 years after their first big hit?

What makes them so successful even 20 years after their first big hit? Well, firstly, The Pet Shop Boys (PSB) has the ability to write good songs. When they first entered into the UK (and European?) charts, they were gaining a solid fan base, which led them to success into the future.

Also, like other bands, such as U2, PSB managed to try new ideas, not only in song writing but in image too. They have appealed to a wide range of sub-cultures, plus they have not upset their fan-base, as well as the media/British press.

From a personal viewpoint, the songs have always been unique without becoming 'a copied sound' from anyone else. Also, if you listen to the songs carefully, a lot of details into the instrumental arrangements have been used. The synthesisers, in particular, have been carefully programmed/used without being over-used - this appeals to numerous people without having headaches! On top of that, PSB have tried using cover versions (which were not cheesy, thank you!) and guest musicians. Trying out different musicial genres helped too, e.g. carribean/ethnic styles, classical.

Finally, they are musicians. They have played numerous concerts across the globe, whether they were informal (e.g. university rounds), or simply large and exposed (e.g. G8 summit in Europe...Brussels - ?).

I am sure that there are more reasons but, at the end of it, the band members have talent, stick-ability, team player skills, adaptable and intelligent (i.e. listen to Neil speak during past interviews - his oral sentence construction, plus personal choice of technical/appropriate vocabulary, is better than mine!).

A massive loyal fanbase, and the fact that they don't churn out that many albums these days, so when one does come out it's still a big deal.
Also 80's music has kinda come back into vogue now so the Pet Shop Boys sound is cool once again
