Ville-Marie is the area if you are looking for a job.
Plateau Mont Royal is a fun area to live.
Plenty of of small restaurants and bars .
What type of job are you looking for?
Sainte-Famille is a better street to live than Peel.
Peel has two sections : Near St.Catherine , there the street is filled with bars, pubs and restaurants The north part has boutiques and small art galleries.
I live in Rue Dowd , it's a quite street, near St.Patrick's .
There are several lofts were people share.
Great area to live. Near Peel, Ville Marie, the cinemas, Parc Royale, Old Montreal and the Chinese quarter.

The Plateau is much cooler than Ville-Marie. It's my favorite area of Montreal. The rents are usually expensive, but occasionnally you'll find a good deal. The Mile-End is right by the Plateau, and a bit more affordable. Outremont is next to the Mile-End, and is a gorgeous neighborhood. You can find good deals there, sometimes.
Peel is a big street with lots of shops. Ste-Famille is a smaller and calmer street located near downtown. Better for living.
I personnally hate the Peel area of downtown. Too much trash, noise, weird people, and hookers.

depends on what kind of job you want. If you're on Peel, there's 3 or 4 (or 5) undersground malls that are connected. So basically you have all the stores in the malls, along with the ones outside (St. Catherine street) to choose from. There's retail, restaurants and other stuff. It's pretty easy to get a retail job. But remember, for downtown, you need french.
good luck!

Peel is right downtown, but Ste-Famille isn't far from downtown either; depending on the job you might be able to walk to either place.
Both districts are great. Ville-Marie is downtown, many (but not only) highrises, lots of students. Plateau has more variety in terms of housing, ages, languages.

Well Peel is right downtown and is pretty clsoe to everything. St-Laurent is really "downtown" but peel is close enough.
I know people who lived in the plateau Mont Royal, and they loved it there, so i would go with that!
Bienvenue!
