I know this is a somewhat rhetorical and humorous question but, are there any societal reasons he was depicted in the early movies without facial hair or was it just because a clean shaven face is nicer to look at?

According to an old Weismuller movie the dialog went something like this: "Tarzan see white man shave so Tarzan shave." He had a list things like that he was saying to Jane about why he wore clothes etc. Saw this 30+ years ago so my memory is fuzzy on the entire list.

I think it was a creative choice to differentiate him from the apes. Tarzan was from wealthy British parents (marooned off the coast of Africa in a shipwreck) and at the time the movie was made, beards weren't popular with noble men. And it helped make him more clean and human looking in the jungle with the monkeys. That's my theory at least.

good question. i never seemed to ask myself that. it must be a genetic thing because there are people without beards. or it could be that a clean shaven face is nicer to look at. i think it's more the second one.
