Most smoggers can try to fix what's wrong and depending on your state there's a limit to the dollar amt needed to pass. After that limit, you technically didn't pass, but you get the certificate anyways. Have you tried using Premium gas? A few friends swear by it , they siphon off the regular unleaded and fill the tank with premium and drive around for about 50 miles, then re-smog. There's a few additives out there that claims you can pass after using their stuff. You can try donating the car to a charity to get the tax write off. You can register it in another state where it might pass smog. Different states have different criteria levels. If the emissions are very high, do us all a favor and retire the polluter.

Assuming your car isn't totally trashed engine-wise, some simple things could help you pass the emissions test. First, tune up the engine. Second, go to Auto zone or some similar place...there is a gas additive you can put in the fuel that will reduce emissions...some of the places that make these products even guarantee that you'll pass or they'll refund your money.

Hope this helped.

It could be a $5 filter or something that could make it fail, don't sell it just because of it not passing the smog test. There are many routes you can take. Talk to your friends that have automotive skills, talk to a different mechanic other than the smog guy.

Hmmm....seems like you should be able to sell it in another state? Or perhaps a car dealership would be willing to work with you on a trade, if it would be too hard for you to get the car out of state, I'm sure they'd be able to sell it elsewhere. And there's always Ebay, maybe someone would come to you.
