Run Silent, Run Deep
Das Boot
U-571
Down Periscope
K-19
Hunt for Red October
I know that is 6, but they are still the best for accuracy of lifestyle onboard a submarine, the capabilities of submarines, and the missions that subs would do. Yes I put Down Periscope on there, but it was the best movie to see how submariners behave when they are having fun and the politics the CO's face in the real navy.

1. Das Boot
2. Crimson Tide
3. Hunt For Red October
4. K-19
5. U-571
Haven't seen too many of the old ones. Crimson Tide was the closest to my experience, even though I was on a fast attack and not a Trident. If the Chop (supply officer: Gandolfini) had ever screamed at me to call him sir, I probably would have done some brig time for laughing in his face. The dog would not have happened, either.
Hunt for Red October is good until they try to man that big sub with just like 6 people, all in the conn. Who's running the freakin' reactor plant?
U-571 is my least favorite. The message seemed to be that McConahey was a good captain only after he sent a crew member to his death. Not too cool. Keitel made a good COB, though. There are a few salty dogs out there like that.

I don't know that I could name five submarine movies. The two that immediately come to mind are Das Boot and The Enemy Below (with Robert Mitchum as a destroyer captain and Curt Jergens as a German U-Boat captain).
Incidentally, Crimson Tide, while a very good movie (good enough to be on the list), is a re-working of a 1960s movie called THE BEDFORD INCIDENT with Richard Widmark and Sidney Poitier. Rent it sometime. You just might be impressed with it.

I actually haven't see DAS BOOT yet, so I guess you can't consider me a true submarine film buff!
However, my favorites so far would have to be:
1) U-571: It was a very fine production piece with some very good moments, and a wonderful pace / rhythm to it.
2) K-19 The Widowmaker: I had my doubts about this one, but thanks to Liam Neson's great characterization, it quickly became a favorite of mine. I also enjoy watching Harrison Ford playing non-likeable characters, and he's quite the *ssh*le in the film.
Well I would go on but unfortunatly mu lunch break has come to an end and I don't wish to get caught doing this during buisness hours!
Cheers,
Butter

For WW2, it would be either Up, periscope; U-571; or Das Boot.
Otherwise, I agree with Crimson Tide, or Red October.
Destination Tokyo was good for its time, too, as was Run Silent, Run Deep:
