I'm going to be in Singapore for 3 days before travelling onto Malaysia. What are the best things to do in Singapore?

it really depends on when you make your way down here really.

but these are some of the best things to do all year round:

shopping: this is always a classic and a good thing to fall back on. head on down to places like orchard road.

heritage tours: singapore is a multicultural society rich in history and heritage. visit places like chinatown, little india, kampong glam, the mouth of singapore river where the merlion is and forst canning park. there are also day heritage tours and walks that are available for toursits and locals who want to find out more about singapore's history and its people.

food: this is another MUST thing to do in singapore. with singapore multicultural society, there is really no surprise that we have a huge variety of dishes from different cultures all conviniently located on one island. to get the best deals and to try all the local delights make sure to head on down to places like chinatown (for local chinese food), little india (for north/south indian delights, kampong glam and geylang serai (for the malay cuisines). of course if you dont have the time you can go to places like lau pa sat, a famous one-stop food centre that has everything that a singaporean could possibly want.
make sure to try the satay, chicken rice, hokkien mee and prata. (my personal favourites).
singapore and malaysia, being so close to one another, have similar types of dishes so dont worry if you cant have your fill in singapore. just carry on pigging out in m'sia

immerse yourself in our lifestyle: ride the MRT (mass rapid transit - our local train system) and visit the heartlands and see how singaporeans live and play. stroll through the neighbourhoods and flats and get a glimpse of the everyday singaporean.

places of interest: you can also visit some of these places of interest if you want to. the singapore zoological gardens, the night safari, escape theme park and wild wild wet, the esplanade, botanical gardens, singapore heritage museum...

night life: if you want to experience singapore's night life you can make your way down to boat quay and clarke quay, both of which have a wide array of pubs (some irish and british even) and eating outlets. you can also head on down to some clubs along mohommad sultan road.

in my personal opinion as a singaporean, i would advise you against visiting all these tourist cliches like the zoo and gardens and theme parks, especially since you only have three days. to relly appreaciate singapore and to saturate your time here with memorable experiences, i suggest going on heritage tours and sampling food in singapore. also i strongly encourage you to drop by the heartlands and have a peek at the everyday singaporean's life style. some local tour agencies have heartland tours and heritage tours. you can approach the hotel receptionist for assistance.

i really hope you enjoy our island before moving on to malaysia. it maybe small but we are rich in culture and diversity. if you need anymore information just contact me again and i'll be happy to help you out.

cheers.

You have already been given some good suggestions that get the thumbs up from me, but there are a few things extra I can suggest that made my trip to Singapore that little bit more special

1. Fountain of Wealth - near Suntec City shopping complex, it is the world's only inverted water fountain (and a bloody big one too!) There is a daily light/laser show at 8pm I think, and for a period, they turn the fountain off so you can walk underneath it - walk round it three times and it brings you good fortune apparently!

2. Singapore Duck Tours ! An amphibian vehicle will pick you up from Suntec, and take you on a brilliant guided land tour of the city before racing down straight into the water and taking you on a water tour of the main bay, Marina Bay - fantastic !

3. The Garlic restaurant - (if you like garlic!) the ice cream included ! If not to your taste, opposite is the chocolate bar - from a hot chocolate to chocolate liquors !! And geat coffees too !

Have a great time - Malaysia is just as exciting !

You should do the following :-

Day 1 - Visit Jurong Bird park, Zoo in the late morning/early afternoon. In the evening go to Orchard road to have a look at the malls and the main shopping district.
Have dinner/drinks at Boat Quay.

Day 2 - Visit Sentosa for the whole day. Main attractions are dolphin lagoon and laser show. For a drink during the hot day, visit one of the beach bars in Sentosa.
After the laser show head to Ministry of Sound/Attica/Crazy Horse in Clarke Quay to get a sample of the night life

Day 3 - Visit Asian Civilisation museum in the morning and Chinatown and Little India in the afternoon/evening to give a flavour of Singapore's diverse cultures.

Singapore has amazing types and numbers of different cuisines available and you should use all the opportunity to sample these.

At the end of 3 days, you should have a good introduction to what Singapore is all about !!!

Go sightseeing.....take a walk around Boat Quay and have the obligatory Singapore Sling at Raffles.

It's good for shopping.

Also, Singapore Zoo is one of the best in the world and well worth a visit.

You could take a trip to Sentosa but I found it a bit dull to be honest!

Boat Quay
Clarke Quay
Sentosa
Asian Civilisations Museum
Raffles
Shopping
Night Safari (top tip)
Zoo
Botanical Gardens
China Town (another top tip)
When you get hot, duck down into the MRT and take advantage of the aircon!

That should be enough for 3 days. Have fun and enjoy Malaysia too!
