We were evacuated for Rita because everyone saw first hand the devastation that Katrina caused. Trust me, we normally wouldn't have evacuated, we normally tough out the hurricanes that hit our areas. But we were all thin-skinned & worried after seeing the Katrina situation unfold. Also, they had to deicde early on the evacuation since our cities were at basically maximum capacity with Katrina evacuees. It took a lot longer to evacuate since we were flooded with extra population.
Also, it's just my personal opinion, but the Katrina fiasco was more in the Louisiana government's hands than in Bush's. Blanco, & Nagin were the ones who dropped the ball.
And to the person who says that Katrina is the only subject not focused on....try being evacuated, worried about your home & all you see on the news is information about New Orleans & Katrina a month after it hit. You couldn't get any info on Rita because they were still talking about Katrina nonstop.

It amazes that persons nonetheless do no longer understand why Katrina grew to become into the style of disaster. I certainly have grown up at college discovering New Orleans might sometime be underwater. N.O. is a like a soup bowl located between a lake and a river. approximately 12 feet under sea point! The levies have been ignored by using our close by government. Mississippi had gotten the brunt of the typhoon. N.O.'s levies broke b/c they might basically withhold a catogory 3 typhoon. Dolly isn't something, what a tropical typhoon or a catagory a million typhoon. that may no longer something. I certainly have been by using limitless hurricanes. A cat 4 or 5 and you will possibly desire to evacuate.

Evacuations are handled on a local level. While New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin (black) was arguing with the Governor of Louisiana over what to do, hundreds of empty and available buses filled with water. For the mayor of a city below sea level not to have an evacuation plan for it's low-income residents speaks more to the rampant corruption that exists in the city of New Orleans than the supposed racism of the Bush administration.

Ummm I don't know, maybe the people left when they were told to do so. It's not the federal government's responsibility to evacuate residents, it's the states. Louisiana let the people of New Orleans down and it's as simple as that. Blaming the Bush administration is just a ludicris as blaming the governor of Oregon. The fault almost solely rests on Nagan and Blanco.

I so agree!! When people say the people whom were impacted by hurricane Katrina are whinning I respond, Are you serious!!!Personally, I feel that the correct protocol was not taken. Many residents of New Orleans did not have power up to 10 hours before the storm so how could one possibly evacuate. Also, it was not the hurricane that caused all the disaster it was the lack of responsibility of the engineer who waited 40 + years to adhere to the codes and upkeep of the levees. When the levees broke that's when all hell broke loose. That's why people blame the govt. Do you believe if the Statue of liberty needed upkeep or maintenance it will be ignored for 30 + years or even the White House. i don't think so? Ignoring the levees was just the political agenda of the big time builders to rebuild New Orleans as a Casino district. they were just awaiting something to destroy and clear as many poor and minorities as they could without paying them off to move. Gentrification, look it up!!
Imagine your 16 year old cousin picked up for a possible suspect for vandalism on Aug. 28, 2005 just because he fit the description of a young black male with a red t-shirt and blue jeans. He sat in a holding cell for 48 hours. Due to all the drama with Katrina he was not given the phone call nor did he get evacuated. As the water grew him and other whom were stopped or detained by the police just set in a cell while the water was rising. They all drowned many were not even convicted nor did they committ crimes (runaways, profiled suspects) See the media left out so many things and you have the audacity to say its whining many people died slow and painfully, watching there lives pass by why the water rose. Our gov't who say the work for all people have their political agendas and the caliber of people whom made up New Orleans did not make their agenda!! And Katrina was an aid in whipping out what they see as the bottom percentage!!

Who says that only "all the whites were evacuated in the blink of an eye?"
I think you have to accept that some people in this world have racist opinions/views as they do other prejudices.

When Katrina hit we were being told to evacuate.I chose to stay just like several others. You can not blame the government. The evacuation orders were out but they can't force you to leave your home. You can only blame the citizens. Some did not have the money to leave but the people around them would have said yea come on you can ride with me.There are good people all over the gulf coast who would help in a crisis like that.It is their own fault they didn't leave. The news showed us where it was going for 3 days thats plenty off time.

Please tell me that you at least went through Katrina> I have been talking to a good many of my friends, who like me, are sick and tired of the Katrina questions on here probably from people who were no where near the places that the hurricane hit.
If you were a victim of Katrina then fine, if your family members were victims of Katrina fine, if you are living somewhere far away and safe and are just trying to stir up crap please just hush. We who actually went through this thing are trying so hard to put the pieces of our lives back together.
Find something constructive to do. They still need a lot of help in N.O. and on the Gulf Coast. Perhaps your time might be better served helping to uplift as opposed to dragging down.

Bush definitely handled Katrina wrongly. He may be racist, but he has appointed two black people to his team and he has other non-white people in prominent positions in his administration. He also has relatives who are half hispab=nic as his brother married a hispanic woman and their children are non-white.
